Benintendi was the first to get the thumb. His actions didn’t seem to warrant it, however. He was also shown the door. So, what happened? First off, there’s no way that Benintendi was arguing the play at first. It was not close.

Padres take another loss in the Rockies series

On June 15th the Padres took on the Rockies in the third of a four-game series. Some people say baseball is boring, but if you were able to watch tonight’s game, I have a feeling you would disagree. The padres were able to get themselves three ejections throughout the game. Manny Machado struck out in the 5th inning and did not hide his feelings about it. After voicing his opinion on the called strike 3, Machado was ejected by home plate umpire Bill Welke. In the 6th inning, Andy Green and Matt Strahm were also ejected from the game. After a heated argument with the umpire and a lot of yelling, Welke had seen enough and threw Andy Green out of the game as well. This was Andy Greens eleventh ejection in his career and second of the season. Ironically enough, both ejections this season came from Welke. Even though it is frowned upon for the manager of the team to be yelling at the umpire, it was nice to see Andy Green showing some emotion. With the Padres struggling these last few weeks, this might be the spark that they needed.

Manny Machado suspended by MLB after tirade against umpire San Diego Padres star Manny Machado was issued a one-game suspension and a fine by MLB on Monday after a tirade against an umpire led to his ejection over the weekend. Machado was angry about a called third strike in Saturday’s game against the Colorado Rockies. He fumed to umpire Bill Welke. MLB decided Machado needed to be punished for “aggressively arguing and making contact” with Welke. Unfortunately, the Padres weren’t able to take the win against the Rockies like they did last night. After the exciting comeback the Padres had yesterday, the team and fans came into today’s game with a lot of hope and enthusiasm, but it wasn’t enough. The Padres started with Eric Lauer on the mound who threw 68 total pitches with 42 strikes, giving up 10 hits and 5 runs. Lauer only pitched 2.2 innings before Robbie Erlin came in to give up 6 hits and 6 runs. Phil Maton came in for one inning and was able to keep runs off the board, but Gerardo Reyes relieved Maton and gave up another 3 runs, giving the Rockies a total of 14 runs. With Lauer unable to make it through 3 innings, and the bullpen once again hemorrhaging runs, the Padres offense was fighting an uphill battle from the start.

It is hard to imagine a world where 8 runs on 13 hits is not enough to win you a ball game. However, with all the chaos that went on in the mile-high city, San Diego’s hot bats couldn’t bring them the win. We can hope the team can take it from Taylor Swift and “Shake it off” for the fourth and last game of the series against the Rockies tomorrow night.

Final: 8-14 Rockies
