If there's anyone who knows about the prowess of new Michigan head coach Juwan Howard, it's former Wolverines basketball star Jimmy King.

King, along with Howard, Jalen Rose, Chris Webber and Ray Jackson, was part of the Fab Five, the maize and blue squad in the early 1990s that changed the entire culture of basketball - not just in Ann Arbor or at the college level, but across all levels.

WolverinesWire crossed paths with King hours after Howard's introductory press conference a few weeks back, and he was so ecstatic, he said he was more excited about the hire than Howard himself. Joining the Locked On Wolverines podcast on Wednesday night, King shared why his excitement level is so high for his former teammate, and why he's excited about the new direction of Michigan basketball.

Five great Juwan Howard was welcomed back as the new head coach of the Michigan basketball team. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that are doubting the fact that I'm a first-time head coach. A group that's inspired by their play. A group that enjoys each other's success . A group that is all "You've got to give Coach (Tom) Izzo a lot of credit. His program is doing a fantastic job over the

Former Michigan Wolverines players Juwan Howard , Jimmy King and Jalen Rose cheer for Michigan in the first half against the Louisville Cardinals That’s a lot of faith in homegrown talent. Michigan 's Juwan Howard answers questions during Michigan 's annual media day on Tuesday, Oct.

"For him to accept the job - first to be considered and then him actually accepting the job to become the head coach of the men's program is just incredible," King told WolverinesWire. "Especially in the manner in which it went down with Beilein departing the way he did, and just kind of the whirlwind of what happened after that.

"My sentiments was just that all the things that went on throughout the years, the relationship with the Fab Five - I'm just using that in general, we all had our relationship with the university individually obviously - and that's why it's so exciting to see Juwan get the job. And I was saying I was excited because, again, it's just surreal to think that my former teammate and roommate is the head coach at the University of Michigan. It's a big opportunity and a big honor. That's why I was cheesin' ear to ear and so excited when I saw you at the press conference."

Howard Schultz pauses presidential campaign efforts after back surgeries

Howard Schultz pauses presidential campaign efforts after back surgeries Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks who began building an independent campaign for president earlier this year, announced on Wednesday that he was pausing his bid after undergoing three back surgeries this spring. "Today, I am feeling much better, and my doctors foresee a full recovery so long as I rest and rehabilitate. I have decided to take the summer to do just that," Schultz said in an email to supporters. Schultz's desire to run as an independent faced staunch criticism from Democrats who worry he could divide the anti-Trump vote and help reelect the Republican president.

One of the key reasons people expect Juwan Howard to be a success as the head coach of Michigan basketball is a projected ability to recruit. Yet, the 2020 class is going to be critical to Howard ’s success with Michigan basketball. Depending on how many players he is able to add for

Jimmy Hal King (born August 9, 1973) is an American retired professional basketball player who played in the NBA and other leagues.

Like we stated above, the Fab Five changed the culture of basketball in its entirety, and Howard was something of a ringleader of that enigmatic group.

Now, 27 years later, will Howard's new Michigan basketball team be up for having a similar type of swag? Will future Wolverines teams have the type of bravado and style as the one Howard played for?

King thinks so, not just stylistically, but also in how the team plays.

Having known Howard and how he operates, King says that once he's put his fingerprint on the Wolverines, the naysayers will quiet down rather quickly.

But, ultimately, it's not just because Howard's approach is one of brash confidence - instead, it's because his players will play through the roof for a man that's giving them his all.

"Teams always embody the temperament of their coach," King said. "Juwan - he was always our cheerleader. If you ever look back at the film, and again, I know he was a player. I know he gets excited. He loves the game. He loves seeing young athletes succeed. While they're messing up or succeeding, he's going to be there, very vocal and cheering them on with a loving hand. That's just the personal side that I know of him. I know he's gonna be firm, but fair. I think you can count on him loving the kids, and that's one thing I can say. Not to call him a big teddy bear, but he can be when he needs to, but he can also put the hammer down when he needs to, so it's a perfect balance. I just think that's a healthy environment that he's going to foster and for those kids.

"We'll see. I'm excited. I hope that - I know it's gonna work. That's my parting shot. I know it's gonna work because his intentions aren't manufactured. He's going to - I think, honestly, I think he's gonna change the game as a coach like he did as a player. I think he's gonna do that. I think he's gonna shock a lot of people with the success that he has and that he carries here."
