Just when things were looking up for Giancarlo Stanton, he appears to have hit another setback.

The Yankees slugger was pulled from Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Blue Jays before the fourth inning with what the team announced as a right knee contusion.

He later underwent an MRI exam for further evaluation of the bruise, though results weren’t immediately available and his status remains unclear.

“We’ll see what we have going into [Wednesday’s game],” Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters after the game. “We’ll see where he is when he comes in in the morning.”

Boone claimed Stanton suffered the injury while running the bases in the bottom of the first inning, specifically when he was tagged out sliding into third base on the back end of a double play. Stanton remained in the game and attempted to play through the pain but was eventually replaced by Brett Gardner.

“After he moved around in the outfield there, it felt like it was the right thing to do,” Boone said. “At this point I’m hoping it’s a bone bruise. I think [Wednesday] will be a better indicator.

“If it’s something that’s short, eventually he’ll get into a good place. If we’re able to avoid a serious injury I’m not worried about it. There’s plenty of time to start playing into that rhythm we felt like he was starting to get into.”
