But that didn't quell the speculation. Far from it.

The Knicks had been rumored as his most likely destination. Many Pundits and prognosticators had projected Durant's decision as a virtual done deal, that the only thing left was to sign the contract.

The presumption was that Durant would head to Madison Square Garden with Irving, a close friend.

The fact that Durant's agent and business partner, Rich Kleiman, was a Knicks fan only fueled the speculation.

But all along there was going to be competition for the Knicks, particularly from the Nets, Clippers and Durant's own Warriors, who had the capability to offer him more money than any other team.

Durant's future was still unclear.

Then it became even more uncertain in the playoffs. Durant injured his calf in the Western Conference semifinals, returned in Game 5 of the NBA Finals and promptly ruptured his Achilles.

Golden State went on to lose to the Toronto Raptors as Durant headed into an uncertain future.

Kevin Durant’s free agency: An in-depth breakdown of the superstar’s options As the Warriors endured the most trying season of their dynastic run, they struggled to escape speculation about Kevin Durant’s pending free agency. Then, with one planting of the foot in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, all the rumblings about where Durant could land were overshadowed by one word: Achilles. As Durant begins a nine- to 12-month recovery, he enters free-agency Sunday with more questions than answers. The speculation hadn't calmed down in recent weeks.

Durant was in New York recovering from surgery, and reports were constantly circulating about which teams he'd meet with and when he'd make his decision.

Teams, meanwhile, had to decide whether signing Durant was a risk worth taking.

He's almost certainly going to miss all of next season. When he plays again, he'll be 32 years old with a lot of mileage on his legs. He'll likely be on a very stringent minutes restriction when he comes back, at least at the start.

At that point, the window on his prime will be closing.

And no one knows exactly how Durant will come back from an Achilles tear, a notoriously difficult injury to recover from.

Still, Durant was one of the best players in the NBA, if not the best, when he suffered the injury. Even if he's slightly diminished when he gets healthy, he still likely would be a formidable player.

But that's no guarantee.

Regardless, Durant's future is no longer uncertain. He knows where he'll be going forward.

The speculation is finally over.
