John Sterling's consecutive-games streak as the Yankees' play-by-play announcer is coming to an end.

The longtime New York fixture — known for his trademark home run calls and signature "Yankees win! Thuuuuh Yankees WIN!" after victories — told the New York Post that he will be stepping away from the booth temporarily to focus on his health.

He's expected to step away Thursday, his 81st birthday, and be replaced by YES/ESPN’s Ryan Ruocco.

“For the moment, I’m a little under the weather,” Sterling said. “I’ve put in the time. I want to feel better, and they think this is the time for me to do it — and I agree.”

John Sterling (born John Sloss; July 4, 1938) is an American sportscaster best known as the radio play-by-play announcer of Major League Baseball's New York Yankees . Sterling called 5060 consecutive Yankees games, beginning in 1989, before taking an 8-day (4-game) break in July 2019.

For the past 30 years, John Sterling ’s voice has been synonymous with the New York Yankees – and he hasn’t missed calling a game since 1989. Sterling , 81, told WFAN’s Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts that he is feeling a “little bit under the weather.” “I plan to broadcast the games at Citi Field

The last time Sterling missed a game was in 1989 — 30 years ago — because of his sister's death.

“I thought it was very nice I was able to do it,” Sterling said of his three-decade streak.

Sterling didn't specify how he hasn't been feeling well, nor how serious his condition is. However, he's expected to call the team's series against the Mets this week and to possibly be back in the booth after the All-Star break.

According to the Post report, Sterling and booth partner Suzyn Walden have called more games together than any broadcast pairing since they first teamed in 2004.

Sterling has been encouraged by executives to take the break so he can make it through the 162-game MLB regular season in good health with an eye toward the postseason.
