Man sentenced to life in prison for murder of Virginia Beach woman A man was sentenced Tuesday for his role in the murder of Virginia Beach resident Jeanie Murphy. Tramonte Hines Tramonte Hines was sentenced in Virginia Beach Circuit Court to life in prison plus 120 years based off his charged of first degree murder, use of a firearm and conspiracy to murder. According to the Commonwealth Attorney’s office, Jeanie Murphy was shot while inside Jr. Market off of South Lynnhaven Road in 2010. Police say she was shot during an armed robbery of the business. Prosecutors say Murphy came inside the store while the robbery was going on. One of two men who were trying to rob the business opened fire, hitting Murphy twice.

Pernell Whitaker (born January 2, 1964) was an American former professional boxer who competed from 1984 to 2001, and has since worked as a boxing trainer.

Norfolk native and Olympic boxing gold medalist Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker was hit and killed at a busy Virginia Beach intersection, police tell 13News Now.

The accident happened just after 10 p.m. on Sunday at the intersection of Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road. Arriving officers found Whitaker had been hit by a car. He died at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle stayed and spoke with police.

On Monday morning, police confirmed the victim is the 55-year-old boxing legend.

Whitaker's professional career spanned from 1984 to 2001, where he became a four-weight world champion. He won the gold in the 84 Olympics in the Lightweight category, and after retiring, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006.

Whitaker was born in Norfolk and made Hampton Roads his home.  In 2014, he made national headlines after evicting his own mother from a home he purchased for her.

In a coincidence, his own brother was hit and injured by a car last year in Norfolk.

Following Sunday night's accident, traffic on westbound Northampton Boulevard was shut down for several hours but it has since reopened.

Pedestrian Noel Brown and many others cross at Northampton Boulevard and Baker Road. They all say it's a dangerous intersection.

"The light changes real fast," Brown said. "As soon as I get across the street, suddenly it changed, and you have to stop in the middle and wait for the traffic to go and then you can go."

Officers from the department's Fatal Accident Crash Team are investigating. So far, police have not said if the driver will face any charges.

"I think they need to get more, a little more timing before the lights change. That time needs to be a little longer. When you go up the street, they have like the sign that says walk and you have 20 seconds to get across. One of those. They need to get one of those," said Brown.

Brown said the victim and his family are in his thoughts and prayers.

"I feel bad for whoever's family that man was, Brown said, before authorities identified the victim as Whitaker.

2 Killed, 3 Hospitalized in Violent Huntington Beach Crash.
Two people were killed, and several others hospitalized in a violent collision between two vehicles in Huntington Beach Monday night. The crash occurred just before 9:30 p.m. in the 18000 block of Beach Boulevard, Huntington Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief Marty Ortiz said. Arriving firefighters found five patients, including two who were pronounced dead at the scene, Ortiz said. The three other patients were transported to local hospitals. Their conditions were not known. No details on the crash, which involved two compact vehicles, were given. Beach Boulevard was closed between Talbert Avenue and Main Street during the investigation.
