SportBritish Open 2019: J.B. Holmes loses nearly $700,000 due to Sunday struggles
British Open: Leader J.B. Holmes says lesson from Mickelson, Stenson is a ‘boost’
Kentucky's Holmes shot an opening 5-under-par 66 to take a one-shot lead over Ireland’s Shane Lowry at Royal Portrush.
Entering Sunday's final round at the British Open, J.B. Holmes sat in third place and was six strokes off the lead.
By the end of the last 18 holes of the tournament, it was a completely different story for Holmes. He shot a 16-over 87 on Sunday, dropping him from third place to a tie for 67th.
The weather impacted almost every golfer during Shane Lowry's victory at Royal Portrush, but Holmes may have suffered the most because of it. He struggled to a 5-over par on the front nine, but disaster really struck on the back nine when he carded a triple bogey and double bogey on the 11th and 12th holes. To put Holmes' final round in perspective, this is how much he lost as a result of his performance.
British Open back at Royal Portrush and puts on quite a show
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) — An emotional opening shot by Darren Clarke. A shocking one by Rory McIlroy. Tiger Woods had his worst score to start a British Open. Brooks Koepka quickly got into contention again. Emiliano Grillo made a 1. David Duval made a 14. The Open returned to Royal Portrush after a 68-year absence and made up for lost time with an unusual amount of theater Thursday. When more than 15 hours of golf before a robust, sellout crowd finally ended, J.B. Holmes was atop the leaderboard at a major for the first time in 11 years. Even that might have been fitting.

Holmes had only five bogeys through the first three rounds. He shot 11 bogeys or worse in the final round.
He was among the best golfers at the British Open over the first 54 holes, even holding a share of the lead after the first two days. It's safe to say Holmes will put Sunday's performance in the rear-view mirror and move on.
