Report: Clowney won't get long-term deal before franchise-tag deadline The Houston Texans and pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney aren't expected to reach a long-term deal before Monday's deadline for franchise-tagged players to do so, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Without an agreement, Clowney would play the 2019 season on a one-year tender worth $15.9 million. Earlier this offseason, it was reported that Clowney and the Texans were far from an agreement. They apparently haven't gotten much closer despite front-office changes in Houston, which included the firing of general manager Brian Gaine. Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick in 2014, totaled 47 tackles, nine sacks, and three fumble recoveries during 2018.

According to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero, Clowney has been working out, is in communication with his teammates and coaches, and is studying the playbook ahead of the 2019 season.

He pointed out that as Clowney did not sign his franchise tender he will not be subject to fines for missing training camp, which he is expected to miss.

However, Pelissero said that he has spoken to one person who has been in contact with Clowney, and the news regarding the regular season should relax Texans fans.

"They would be shocked if Clowney misses any regular-season games," said Pelissero of his contact.

As it stands it looks highly likely that Clowney will remain with the Texans this year, although rumors persist on social media that the team would consider a trade.
