Gordon: Hopefully I end up a Charger, but I want to get paid

Gordon: Hopefully I end up a Charger, but I want to get paid Melvin Gordon wants to be a Charger for life. The running back also wants to get paid. Thus, Gordon said Saturday he has no idea what’s going to happen. “I want to end up with the Chargers. That’s my home,” Gordon said at SportsCon 2019 in Dallas. “I’m not going to sit here and be like, ‘Man, I don’t want to go back to the Chargers, dah, dah, dah.’ Like that’s the team that blessed me with an opportunity. They started my life. They changed my life. Of all 32 teams, that was the team that called me. I can’t forget them for that.

Gordon was a no-show at camp Wednesday and placed on the reserve/did not report list.

Speaking with reporters, Telesco said the Chargers did offer Gordon a contract, as was previously reported, and that the team will go with the running backs they currently have, per Eric Williams of ESPN.

“I’m not naive: I know we’re better with Melvin Gordon,” Telesco said, per Williams. “But we’ve got a strong group of guys that are here, and it’s their time to work and get ready to go.”

Ezekiel Elliott has privately said that he’s planning a training-camp holdout

Ezekiel Elliott has privately said that he’s planning a training-camp holdout Chargers running back Melvin Gordon isn’t being coy about his intent to hold out until he gets a new deal. Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott apparently is, at least for now. Per a league source, Elliott has privately said that he will hold out of training camp unless he gets a new contract. Report: Chargers RB Melvin Gordon Seeks New Deal, Not Showing Up For Training Camp. Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon is officially in a holdout status as he informed the team that he will not report to the start of training camp, reports ESPN.com's Adam Schefter.

Melvin Gordon has always taken pride in playing for the name on the back of his jersey. But, Gordon has showed up as a threat through the air as well. “Look at what he's doing in the passing game with his hands as a receiver,” Chargers Head Coach Anthony Lynn said earlier this season.

That is as strong a statement a general manager can make without outright saying, “We’re not giving him any more than what has been offered.” Reading between the lines, though, that’s exactly what Telesco is saying.

Gordon has threatened to hold out into the regular season and reportedly feels the offer Telesco and Co. gave him was nowhere near what he is worth. Unfortunately, while he does deserve a raise, the simple fact is the NFL in general has devalued the running back position.

So, there’s little-to-no chance that the Chargers are ever going to offer the kind of guaranteed money Gordon would like to see. Le’Veon Bell found that out the hard way earlier this spring, and he’s honestly better than Gordon in terms of being a dual-threat back.

With that in mind, it sure sounds like the Chargers are preparing to open the season without Gordon. At the least, they are calling his bluff.
