Tiger faces tough wildcard picks as Presidents Cup captain: Stick with the old, or bring in the new? You can spend as much time as you’d like down the pairings rabbit hole and talk endlessly about team chemistry, but it’s the wildcard picks that keep captains up at night. © Provided by NBC Sports GroupTiger Woods, whose first turn as captain is starting to crystalize with just a month left in the Presidents Cup qualifying process, is a notoriously early riser and the chances are he’s already examined and answered the typical concerns of making captains picks. The primary goal for any captain is to find players who compliment the existing team.

Woods has only played 26 counting events (No, THE MATCH doesn't count) in his two-year window. So when his OWGR is calculated, the 309.47 total points he's earned in those events is being divided by 40 to get his average of 7.7368. It's that number that is ranked No. 6, one spot above Masters foe

Tiger actually played pretty well for a while after his life started unraveling Lately he has been playing almost like the Tiger of old — better, certainly, than many of us ever What happened in his absence, of course , was that a whole new generation of very appealing, un- Tigerish golfers emerged

Not only is he preparing for his first stint as captain of Team USA for the 2019 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne in Australia, he's also still on his quest to tie Sam Snead's all-time PGA Tour wins record.

Woods has a coveted 82nd win in his sights this week at The Northern Trust at Liberty National in Jersey City, N.J., the first of three FedEx Cup Playoff events.

Before Thursday's opening round, Woods sat down with caddie Joe LaCava to answer some fan questions for GOLFTV. Topics of discussion included who's the funniest player on Tour, how LaCava celebrated the Masters' win earlier this year and the strangest thing Woods has in his bag: a crunchy peanut butter and banana sandwich and a very specific sharpie.

THERE HAS never been a golfer like Tiger Woods . This is the first and most important fact about him—the one that puts all others into proper context. When people say Woods has been gone for 10 years, they are guilty of silly-high standards or collective amnesia. Woods has not won a major title

The most surprising answer, however, came to the following question: What's one course Woods hasn't played that's on his bucket list?

"People are probably going to say this is a little bit surprising, but I've never played Pine Valley," said Woods. "I know it's always rated every year as the No. 1 course in the world but I've never been there."

As for LaCava, who has played Pine Valley, his best answer came to the question of whether or not he could remember anything he said to Woods on the back nine at Augusta on Sunday. As LaCava explained it, Woods half-asked him for help reading a putt.

Woods said, “ I never thought my kids have understood what I ’ve been able to do in the game of golf because they always think I ’m the YouTube golfer.” When Woods started preparing for this event, he said his daughter wanted to accompany him on the course and watch. And his son likes to compete

He played the par-4s in minus-2, a six-stroke improvement over 2016. Woods saved perhaps his purest shot Thomas, Fowler and the former world No . 1 Rory McIlroy live near Woods in Florida. The old Woods never would have sounded giddy after a round with five bogeys on his scoreboard.

"On Thursday I would've come over and read it as left-center because it does break a little bit," said LaCava, "but on Sunday my thought was 'Don't even put any break in it, just hammer it and knock it right in the back.'"

Woods begins play this week off the 10th tee Thursday morning at 7:43 a.m. ET alongside Scott Piercy and Wyndham Championship winner J.T. Poston.
