The former Red Sox star has hired Boston ’s former police commissioner to investigate a shooting in the Dominican Republic that left Ortiz hospitalized.

“David has been carefully monitoring the government and police investigation," Ortiz spokesman Joe Baerlein said in a statement Monday, via The Boston Globe. "He had no basis for a long time to challenge their theory of mistaken identity. However, as new facts continue to come up, it lends some optimism that there may be some other conclusions that are drawn before it’s over about why David was shot."

Aside from an initial bedside interview at Santo Domingo Hospital, Ortiz has not spoken to Dominican law enforcement, Baerlein said. Ortiz has also not been in contact with U.S. authorities.

Davis, the former police commissioner, was in charge of the BPD during the Boston Marathon bombings. Baerlein said Ortiz had instructed Davis to put together a team of American and Dominican investigators to get to the bottom of the shooting.

Ortiz has been in a long recovery since the shooting.
