SportJets trade for Colts' cornerback Nate Hairston, bolster dire cornerback situation
Jets' Connor plans to sign new deal before training camp
Winnipeg Jets restricted free-agent forward Kyle Connor is hopeful that he can get a new contract signed before the team's training camp begins in September. "Yeah, that's definitely the plan," Connor said, according to NHL.com's Scott Billeck. "The player never wants to miss time in training camp. It's tough not getting that preparation and time with teammates in practice." Asked about his preference regarding term, the 22-year-old said, "we'll look at everything, but probably focus more on (the) long term," according to TSN.
Cornerback was one of the most obvious postitions of need for the Jets entering the final week of preseason, and New York's front office took a step to address it.
On Tuesday, the Jets acquired third-year Indianapolis Colts cornerback Nate Hairston for a 2020 sixth-round pick, the team announced.

Hairston joins a cornerback position that is littered with question marks. Beyond Trumaine Johnson, Darryl Roberts and Brian Poole, there weren't many players viewed as locks for the 53-man roster. Hairston, who started 11 games across his two years in Indianapolis, gives the Jets another option they can be confident in.
Andrew Luck won’t practice again this week
The Indianapolis Colts will not have starting quarterback Andrew Luck at practice this week as he continues to rehab what’s become a ridiculously nagging injury. Zak Keefer of The Athletic shared head coach Frank Reich’s comment on the issue: Colts coach Frank Reich today: QB Andrew Luck will not practice this week. The issue remains a matter of "full speed movement vs. pain threshold." Team, ideally, will want to know his status for Week 1 next Monday. That'll be 13 days shy of the season opener.— Zak Keefer (@zkeefer) August 20, 2019 The latest on Luck is that his nagging calf injury ended up also turning into a high-ankle issue as he rehabbed.
Hairston was a 2017 fifth-rounder out of Temple and played 27 games for the Colts. He has one career interception and six passes defended, along with two sacks.
The pickup is particularly crucial considering Johnson is still recovering from a hamstring injury, and his availability for Week 1 is uncertain.
The rest of the Jets' cornerbacks, including rookies Kyron Brown and Alex Brown, CFL veteran Tevaughn Campbell and 29-year-old Marcus Cooper, can make their case for the wide-open roster Thursday against the Eagles in the Jets' final preseason game.
