As Russell Okung recovers from a pulmonary embolism discovered this summer, the Los Angeles Chargers placed the offensive tackle on the reserve/non-football illness list Saturday, meaning Okung will miss at least the first six weeks of the season.

Okung revealed that he'd been diagnosed with the condition on July 25, more than six weeks after he visited an urgent care following "unusual chest pain" at practice. The 30-year-old missed all of training camp, and Trent Scott is listed as the first-team left tackle on the Chargers' depth chart.

Los Angeles opens its season in eight days against the Indianapolis Colts. Not only will the Chargers be minus Okung, who has protected quarterback Philip Rivers' blind side for the last two season, but running back Melvin Gordon will still be holding out in all likelihood.

Safety Derwin James — one of the most dynamic defensive rookies in the league last season — suffered a stress fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot during training camp. He underwent surgery and was placed on injured reserve.
