Packers lose on first pass interference challenge

Packers lose on first pass interference challenge The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears opened the NFL season Thursday. It took until the fourth quarter for there to be challenge on a pass interference call (or non-call). The first in NFL history. And the refs were correct and Matt LafLeur and Green Bay were docked their second timeout of the half. History! CHICAGO — The Super Bowl suddenly seems very far away.

Rather than celebrating the NFL’s 100th anniversary with a win Thursday night, the Chicago Bears took the game back a century with a 10-3 loss to their fiercest rivals, the Green Bay Packers. Instead of backing up those Super Bowl-sized expectations that came after winning the NFC North last season, the Bears looked more like a team suited for the basement of the division.

There were stupid penalties and questionable play calls. But most troubling was the ineptitude of Mitchell Trubisky and the offense, who couldn’t find a rhythm until late in the fourth quarter. Even then, after advancing to the Green Bay 16, Trubisky threw two incompletions before being picked off in the end zone by former Bears safety Adrian Amos when he threw into double coverage.

The Bears came into the opener with Super Bowl-sized expectations. Though defensive coordinator Vic Fangio had departed for Denver, all but one starter returned from a unit that led the league in takeaways and points allowed and was third in yardage.

And Trubisky had made big strides, coach Matt Nagy and others insisted, ready to be the elite quarterback Chicago has been craving since Jim McMahon was sporting a headband. The only hole, the only thing that could hold the Bears back was the kicking game.

Or … not.

The defense held up its end of the game, sacking Aaron Rodgers five times and limiting the Packers to a whopping 215 yards. Time and again, they left the offense with great field position. Eddy Pineiro kicked a 38-yard field goal with nary a wobble — though Nagy spoke volumes about the kicker whose leg strength he and general manager Ryan Pace have raved about when he passed on what would have been a 51-yard attempt with little wind.

The NFL got what it deserved with that opening night stinker between Packers and Bears

But the big problem was Chicago’s offense, Trubisky in particular. Someone who was supposed to have taken command of the offense often seemed rushed and rattled. He overthrew his receivers and had little success unless he was throwing to the sidelines. He looked jumpy in the pocket. He was nearly picked by both Darnell Savage and Kevin King.

And if he missed a wide-open Allen Robinson once, he missed him a dozen times.

When his pass to Robinson went for all of negative-one yard just before halftime, a smattering of boos could be heard. They grew louder in the second half, when the Bears crossed midfield three times and came away with nothing.

Worse than that, actually, reversing from the Green Bay 43 all the way back to their own 27 because of three penalties on one drive. By the end of the drive, the Bears were facing first-and-40. Yes, you read that right: first-and-40.

Even that wasn’t the rock bottom, with Trubisky throwing the interception on the next possession.

It’s only Week 1, but it already seems as if it’s getting late in the season for the Bears.
