Eye of the storm: How a length of rope helped me survive Hurricane Dorian

Eye of the storm: How a length of rope helped me survive Hurricane Dorian MARSH HARBOUR, Bahamas, Sept 6 (Reuters) - Before I flew into Marsh Harbour to take pictures of Hurricane Dorian for Reuters I spoke to my cousin, a fire and rescue worker in the Bahamas, who gave me a mystifying piece of advice just before he hung up: Make sure you take some rope. In the end, that piece of rope may have saved my life. I'm a native of Nassau, Bahamas and a freelance photographer who has been shooting pictures for Reuters for around three years, mostly hurricanes. Previously, the worst I'd seen was 2016's Hurricane Matthew, which killed 500 people in Haiti.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jean Segura hit a three-run, walk - off homer against Edwin Díaz moments after Maikel Franco hit a tying, two run shot against the closer in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets 6-3 Thursday to complete a four-game sweep.

The Mets part-time closer was given the chance to prove he rebounded from his most recent nightmare that saw the Amazin’s six-run lead against the Nationals evaporate into thin air. Instead, Diaz could not rise to the occasion and he blew another save opportunity against the Phillies on Friday night. Fortunately for the Mets, the offense bailed him out.

BOX SCORE: METS 5, PHILLIES 4

Pete Alonso dug into the box with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning. The Mets rookie worked a full count against Phillies right-hander Nick Vincent. Alonso drew a walk and plated Juan Lagares from third base for the game-winning run. The Mets claimed the series opener against the Phillies with a 5-4 win at Citi Field. Alonso was doused with Gatorade as the Mets crowded around him at first base.

Mets play longest 9-inning game in NL history ... and lose

Mets play longest 9-inning game in NL history ... and lose Erratic bouts of poor pitching is a season-long stain the Mets can’t seem to rub away. No matter how many runs the Mets offense records in an attempt to soak, rinse and wash the smear off, the blemish reappears. The Mets’ robust lineup tried to overcome their pitching pains in the back-and-forth, tug-of-war 10-7 loss to the Phillies on Sunday afternoon. The game, which lasted four hours and 29 minutes, was the longest nine-inning game in National League history.

Before the walk-off celebrations, Alonso and Wilson Ramos collected RBI singles in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tied game and give the Mets a two-run lead.

The Mets’ late-inning rally set the scene for Edwin Diaz to shut the door on the Phillies. Seth Lugo, Mickey Callaway’s recent go-to reliever for the ninth inning, was unavailable after pitching consecutive games against the Nationals. Mets part-time closer Diaz sorely needed a bounceback performance after blowing his sixth save of the year on Tuesday night in Washington in one of the worst losses of the Mets’ season.

Diaz, towing a 5.61 ERA into his 59th relief appearance of the year, struck out Logan Morrison swinging to begin the ninth inning. That four-pitch strikeout was the highlight of Diaz’s inning.

The 25-year-old blew a fastball by Jean Segura’s head in the next at-bat. Segura grinded through the at-bat to knock a single into right field and brought J.T. Realmuto to the plate representing the tying run. Deja vu all over again, Diaz gave up a two-run moonshot to Realmuto that landed in left field and tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the ninth.

Phils hit 3 HRs, outlast Mets 10-7 to tighten wild-card race

Phils hit 3 HRs, outlast Mets 10-7 to tighten wild-card race NEW YORK (AP) — Looking for every extra edge in a playoff chase, the Philadelphia Phillies tried most everything — stealing and bunting, plus plenty of pinch-hitters and pitchers. On and on they went, mixing and matching against the New York Mets for so long the teams actually began to run out of baseballs. In the end, the Phillies had just enough. Maikel Franco , Scott Kingery and Adam Haseley homered as Philadelphia overcame an early deficit and outlasted the Mets 10-7 Sunday to further tighten the NL wild-card race. "It wasn't the prettiest win by any stretch," manager Gabe Kapler said.

Friday night was Diaz’s seventh blown save and seventh loss of the year. The two-run shot was Diaz’s 14th home run allowed this season. The turbulent inning lifted Diaz’s season ERA to 5.88, his highest of the season, and left the Citi Field crowd wailing in frustration and disappointment.
