They lured the fantasy partnership of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to Brooklyn because Durant and Irving concluded that no other team in the N.B.A. was The New York Times first reported last week that the Nets had also begun to heavily recruit the veteran center DeAndre Jordan, one of Durant ’s

Nets general manager Sean Marks said in a recent interview with Grant Chapman of Newshub that the team isn't officially ruling Durant (Achilles) out for Durant -- who is unlikely to be available for most, if not all, of next season -- is expected to be joined in Brooklyn by Kyrie Irving, as well as veteran

He’s excited about the Nets and thinks players across the roster will have a big season. “Obviously me not starting the season and being injured, you’re gonna see a lot of guys step up and do some things and go to another level,” he said. “I feel like everybody in this environment is gonna step up another level, especially with the circumstances of me not being available. I think everybody’s gonna step up and take it to the next level. We’ve got great coaching, great front office, great fan base that’s excited for something new. It’s a fresh start for everybody I feel.”

Durant also said new teammate Kyrie Irving, whose physics-defying finishes will marquee at Barclays Center down for the next four years, is a special player. “We all see it. He’s one of those guys that you don’t even have to talk about. Just watch him play,” Durant said. “He’ll make you feel a certain way when you watch him. His movements. His mentality out there. His smarts for the game. His efficiency. He’s an all-around player.”

He was also complimentary of the Mavericks’ young core of Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis, expecting a “superstar career” from Doncic going forward. “I’m looking forward to seeing them two come together. I think they’ve got something going down there,” Durant said. “Mark Cuban is always going to support his guys and put them in the best position. That’s a franchise I’m definitely watching for the next few years.”

The interview was almost 50 minutes long, and those were the only answers a two-time NBA champion and Finals MVP gave about basketball. He was more interested in talking music, video games, fashion and life in general.

His favorite three games are NBA 2K, Madden and Grand Theft Auto. “Those are my top three, day and night,” he said. “I can’t get rid of them.”

Durant also admits his player is a cheat code in NBA 2K20 but doesn’t think the developers made him good enough, despite his overall rating of a 96. “I feel like they could have made me better, too,” he said, before rattling off three reasons why: “I can shoot over anybody, I should be able to play point guard, and I can block at the rim.”

Brooklyn’s star forward is heavy into music. He’s been listening to Griselda, YBN Cordae and Gunna all summer. But there are three artists who relate to him on a deeper level because of their physical appearance. “As a kid, it was Snoop Dogg first because, you know, long and skinny,” he said. “And as I started getting to the league, it was Wiz Khalifa and Young Thug. ... So of course I listened to Thug’s album. We’re connected spiritually on a different level.”

He also had love for two of Brooklyn’s own: Biggie and Jay-Z.

“B.I.G., lyrically, he never took a line off, and he told stories like I never heard before; but he only had two albums, but those 2 albums were good enough for the rest of my life,” Durant said. “So, is he up there with Hov? It’s hard for me to say what’s what, because Hov reached a level where he’s bigger than rap. He’s bigger than his lyrics. I can’t even explain him.”

He also knows just how vital a piece of the culture Biggie is to the city he now plays in.

“B.I.G. is always going to be the main influence around our team. We’re driven by his influence, what he rapped about, being in Brooklyn, living in Brooklyn, coming up from Brooklyn, like the bottom. That’s why we play,” Durant said. “We’re inspired by stuff like that. So don’t matter if it’s the jersey, his spirit is always gonna be around the team.”

“I haven’t talked to Kevin in depth about anything like that because there remains so much Adrian Wojnarowski: Obviously, people have talked about Kevin Durant in Brooklyn . Durant hasn’t been traveling with the Nets on road games, and neither has Irving since getting hurt on a West Coast road

Finally, one thing he absolute loves? Hearing his own name referenced in music.

“Hell yeah. I don’t care if it’s an up-and-coming artist, or it’s Drake. It’s dope, cause I know what it’s like being in a studio,” he said. “So for somebody to come up with a creative line around my name. I remember when nobody wanted to talk to me when I was at elementary and middle school. Now people putting my name in raps. I could remember that like it was yesterday. Now to see and hear that stuff about my name is dope. So I appreciate all of it.”
