Brooklyn’s star forward is heavy into music. He’s been listening to Griselda, YBN Cordae and Gunna all summer. But there are three artists who relate to him on a deeper level because of their physical appearance. “As a kid, it was Snoop Dogg first because, you know, long and skinny,” he said. “And as I started getting to the league, it was Wiz Khalifa and Young Thug. ... So of course I listened to Thug’s album. We’re connected spiritually on a different level.”

He also had love for two of Brooklyn’s own: Biggie and Jay-Z.

“B.I.G., lyrically, he never took a line off, and he told stories like I never heard before; but he only had two albums, but those 2 albums were good enough for the rest of my life,” Durant said. “So, is he up there with Hov? It’s hard for me to say what’s what, because Hov reached a level where he’s bigger than rap. He’s bigger than his lyrics. I can’t even explain him.”

He also knows just how vital a piece of the culture Biggie is to the city he now plays in.

“B.I.G. is always going to be the main influence around our team. We’re driven by his influence, what he rapped about, being in Brooklyn, living in Brooklyn, coming up from Brooklyn, like the bottom. That’s why we play,” Durant said. “We’re inspired by stuff like that. So don’t matter if it’s the jersey, his spirit is always gonna be around the team.”

Finally, one thing he absolute loves? Hearing his own name referenced in music.

“Hell yeah. I don’t care if it’s an up-and-coming artist, or it’s Drake. It’s dope, cause I know what it’s like being in a studio,” he said. “So for somebody to come up with a creative line around my name. I remember when nobody wanted to talk to me when I was at elementary and middle school. Now people putting my name in raps. I could remember that like it was yesterday. Now to see and hear that stuff about my name is dope. So I appreciate all of it.”
