The Buckeyes will have to win the Big Ten before getting a chance to break up the Alabama-Clemson duopoly that has ruled college football the last four years. After throttling Nebraska 48-7 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, however, Ohio State made a compelling case to be something else.

Through five games under first-year coach Ryan Day, there isn't a more complete team in college football. The Buckeyes look like a cross-pollination of the John Cooper, Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer teams, and they have no apparent weakness heading into October.

The best bet for Day is to continue doing what those coaches did. Cooper's teams put up big yards and bigger points. Tressel's teams won with complimentary football and dominant defensive fronts. Meyer won the big games without mercy. This iteration of Ohio State did all of that and then some in a victory against the Huskers that looked way too easy.

It was bad in Lincoln. The Buckeyes rolled up 580 yards of offense and limited home-team Nebraska to 231 yards. The Huskers had everything to prove in this game with the "College GameDay" spotlight, but the Buckeyes didn't take long to quiet a crowd yearning to return to the '90s glory days. Ohio State scored on its first six possessions. The seventh was stopped by the clock.

Quarterback Justin Fields (212 passing yards, 72 rushing yards, four total touchdowns) led that offense, which rolled up 378 yards by halftime and hit 7 of 8 third-down conversions. J.K. Dobbins had 114 of his 177 yards by halftime in a ruthless offensive performance that included 24 second-quarter points and exposed Nebraska's defense.

The Buckeyes finished with 368 rushing yards on 6.9 yards per carry. They looked more like those dominant '90s Nebraska teams than Scott Frost's squad did on Saturday.

The Chase Young-led defensive line rattled Nebraska quarterback Adrian Martinez, who had 22 total yards in the first half. Martinez's timing was off, resulting in three interceptions. Jeff Okudah had two interceptions, one of which came while on his back. The unit that failed in road losses at Iowa and Purdue the last two seasons flexed in front of a national audience. Martinez finished with 128 total yards, and the Huskers' only score came with 2:07 left in the third quarter.

Through five games, the Buckeyes have outscored opponents 262-43 and have established themselves as the class of the Big Ten — again. That shouldn't surprise anybody, but Ohio State also looks like it's ready for that heavyweight matchup against Alabama or Clemson in the College Football Playoff. This is a team that might not win those games, but can make it interesting. That's surprising, considering Day is a first-year coach who seems to have enhanced the Meyer model.

MORE: Ohio State's legendary expectations won't change with Day

Is Ohio State the most complete team in the country? That's at least up for debate. Clemson's offense has had hiccups; Alabama's defense is young. The Buckeyes have clicked on both sides at an efficiency rate, and with a plus-219 point differential, they are ahead of the Crimson Tide (plus-185) and Tigers (plus-130).

This was the loudest September statement among those three teams. Ohio State is ready for the big stage again.

That big-stage mentality trickles down from the Meyer-led teams. This was a big game for Nebraska, but the Huskers simply found out what is known in Ann Arbor, Happy Valley, Madison and East Lansing: If you want to be the boss in the Big Ten, then you must show up against the Buckeyes.

Ohio State will get tested in October. Michigan State and Wisconsin, which entered the weekend with top-five defenses, visit the Shoe. The Buckeyes will hit the road on Oct. 18 for a Friday night test at Northwestern. That will set up a November stretch that ends with Penn State and Michigan, the two biggest tests of the regular season.

It's difficult to imagine these Buckeyes not acing those tests, but that's the challenge for Day. Cooper, Tressel and Meyer combined for two national championships, and that is the standard every year in Columbus.

This team looks like they could meet that standard. At least, they should get that chance to prove it.
