WATCH: Saquon Barkley told by specialist he does not need surgery for ankle injury

WATCH: Saquon Barkley told by specialist he does not need surgery for ankle injury Saquon Barkley visited with a specialist this week for a second opinion on his injured ankle, and it does not sound like the star running back will be going under the knife.According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the reigning NFL Rookie of the Year met with "noted specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Green Bay with a recommendation of no surgery.

Giants running back Saquon Barkley has been officially ruled out of Thursday night's game against the Patriots as he continues to rehab his high ankle sprain, the team announced Wednesday.

Barkley was able to return to practice last week but apparently was unable to get medical clearance to play this week.

The Giants also will be without receiver Sterling Shepard, who is in the league's concussion protocol for the second time this season, tight end Evan Engram, the team's leading receiver (373 yards) who is dealing with a sprained MCL, and running back, Wayne Gallman, Barkley's top backup who also is in the concussion protocol.

Jones, defense lead Giants over winless Redskins, 24-3

Jones, defense lead Giants over winless Redskins, 24-3 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) Daniel Jones worked his magic again, Saquon Barkley's replacement Wayne Gallman scored two touchdowns, and Jabrill Peppers scored on a 32-yard interception return to lead the suddenly revived New York Giants to 24-3 victory over the winless Washington Redskins on Sunday. The Redskins' 0-4 start is their worst since losing their first five in 2001. The start also has seriously put coach Jay Gruden's job in jeopardy after five-plus season, a 35-49-1 record and one playoff berth (2015).

The injuries leave New York short-handed against the league's top-ranked defense, an undesirable scenario for rookie quarterback Daniel Jones' first meeting with New England.

Barkley reportedly said he could beat his initial four- to eight-week timetable for recovery, but the Giants staff is taking a cautious approach in easing him back into action.

The 2018 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year injured his ankle in the second quarter of the Giants' Week 3 win over the Buccaneers.

Despite missing the past two games entirely and most of the game in which he was injured, Barkley still leads the Giants in rushing with 237 yards. Gallman is next with 107. Jones will enter Thursday's game as the team's active rushing leader with 78 yards, 25 more than projected starting running back Jon Hilliman.

Giants’ Pat Shurmur won’t rule out a Week 5 return for Saquon Barkley

Giants’ Pat Shurmur won’t rule out a Week 5 return for Saquon Barkley New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur refused to rule RB Saquon Barkley (ankle) out against the Minnesota Vikings, which is sort of amazing.Although Barkley did not participate in practice, he did stretch with his teammates and then proceeded to do some light running, cutting and jumping on the sideline.

The Giants (2-3) will visit the undefeated Patriots at 8:20 p.m. ET Thursday.
