Paralyzed man walks again thanks to brain-controlled exoskeleton

Paralyzed man walks again thanks to brain-controlled exoskeleton A 28-year-old man who fell some 40 feet off a balcony four years ago is getting back on his feet thanks to advancements in brain-controlled robotics technology. The man, identified as Thibault in a new research paper, had his spinal cord severed in the fall, preventing him from moving almost every part of his body. Paralyzed from the shoulders down, and with only partial control over a single arm, Thibault has been training with a robotic exoskeleton that responds to commands from his own brain, and his progress shows that there may be hope for individuals with devastating spinal injuries to regain their mobility.

Harrison Barnes and his wife, Brittany, are helping cover the funeral costs for slain Dallas woman Atatiana Jefferson. Michael Jordan opened a $7 million health-care clinic to serve underprivileged communities in Charlotte. And Shaquille O'Neal donated a home to the family of a 12-year-old Atlanta boy paralyzed by a gunshot wound in August.

Isaiah Payton was leaving a high school football game on Aug. 17 when a stray bullet struck his spine, leaving him without mobility from his chest down. He'd been unable to leave the hospital because his family's current home was not accessible for a paralyzed person.

A mind-controlled exoskeleton helped a paralyzed man walk again

A mind-controlled exoskeleton helped a paralyzed man walk again A paralyzed man regained the ability to walk with the help of a robotic exoskeleton that he controlled with his mind. Unlike other, more invasive mind-controlled robotics, this one used electrodes implanted above the brain's outer membrane, not in the brain itself. That could reduce the risk of infection and other obstacles that have limited the success of mind-controlled robotics. As part of a study with the University of Grenoble Alpes in France, the patient, who goes by Thibault, agreed to have two five-centimeter discs of his skull replaced with brain sensors, each with 64 electrodes.

O'Neal heard about the story and reached out to Payton's mother.

"We found her a house," O'Neal told WXIA Atlanta. "I’m going to pay her rent for the year and I’m going to give her some furniture and it’s sad because her son is paralyzed from the chest down and no mother should have to go to that."

The four-time NBA champion found a one-bedroom home for Payton, his brother and his mother in the College Park neighborhood of Atlanta. O'Neal's relationship with Papa John's helped him pull off the gesture; CEO Rob Lynch and chairman of the board Jeff Smith both chipped in.

"We’re going to give her some furniture, TVs and pay her rent off for a year and help her get on her feet," O'Neal told WXIA.

Payton's friend, Damean Spear, suffered a gunshot wound to his leg during the shooting. A 15-year-old boy, whose name is not being released, has been charged with aggravated assault in connection to the incident.

"This was a reckless, heartless and cowardly act of violence that forever changed the life of a 12-year-old child and his family and deeply affected another juvenile," Atlanta police chief Erika Shields said Thursday.
