Recap: The Cardinals raced out to an early 17-0 lead behind backup running back Chase Edmonds, but they had to fend off the New York Giants throughout Sunday’s game before holding on for a 27-21 victory at MetLife Stadium.

It was the third straight win for the Cardinals (3-3-1), their first three-game streak since 2015 when they won nine straight.

Zane Gonzalez kicked a 35-yard field goal with 2:09 remaining and the Cardinals’ defense stopped the Giants (2-5) on a last-ditch possession, sacking Daniel Jones twice as they brought him down eight times overall for 67 yards in losses.

Patrick Peterson, in his first game back form a six-game suspension, sacked Jones on fourth-and-15 from the Giants’ 33, forcing a fumble with 2:28 left to play. Haason Reddick recovered for the Cardinals, but they had to settle for Gonzalez’s field goal. Terrell Suggs and Brooks Reed each sacked Jones on New York’s final possession.

Marvin Lewis in 'serious consideration' for NFL head coaching openings

Marvin Lewis in 'serious consideration' for NFL head coaching openings Former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis is advising Arizona State, but may be in play for a future head coaching gig back in the NFL.Lewis was fired by the Bengals following last season after 16 years at the helm in Cincinnati. He was never able to win a playoff game but he completely changed the Bengals’ culture for the better and turned them into a consistent winner, making the playoffs seven times and winning the AFC North four times. Lewis caught a lot of flak toward the end of his tenure in Cincy when things got stale, but the Bengals’ 0-6 start in 2019 sure makes him look a lot better by comparison.

This game really wasn't all that suspenseful. Chris Carpenter was well Chris Carpenter. He dominated over eight innings of work. Jim Edmonds did

Edmonds, getting almost all of the work at running back with David Johnson active but rarely used because of a tender ankle, ran for a career-high 126 yards and a career-high three touchdowns on 27 carries. He scored on runs of 20, 20 and 22 yards.

Arizona recorded its first interception of the season, and Jordan Hicks’ pick of a Jones pass was converted into Edmonds’ second score of the game. Jones finished the game completing 22 of 35 passes for 223 yards and one touchdown, a 28-yarder to tight end Rhett Ellison.

The Giants scored a special-teams touchdown shortly after Ellison’s scoring catch when Michael Thomas blocked a punt by Andy Lee and Eli Penny recovered the ball in the end zone to pull the Giants within 17-14 with 9:52 left in the first half.

Giants running back Saquon Barkley returned after missing three games with an ankle injury and finished with 72 rushing yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

Rewind : What we learned in Cardinals ' win over Giants .

Kyler Murray was 14-of-21 for 104 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. He ran 10 times for 28 yards.

Turning point: Trailing 17-14, the Giants were on the move for a potential scoring drive on their second possession of the second half when they faced a second-and-8 from the Cardinals’ 27-yard line. Jones took the snap out of shotgun formation, but before he could find his target, Chandler Jones swept in with a long reach and not only got a sack, but his fourth strip-sack of the season.

Chandler Jones recovered the fumble and three players later, Edmonds waltzed into the end zone for his third rushing touchdown, a 22-yard scamper for a 24-14 lead with 6:05 remaining in the third quarter. It was the 13th fumble caused by the Cardinals this season, most in the NFL, and the eighth strip-sack overall by Arizona.

Jones finished with four sacks on Sunday, giving him 8½ for the season.

Star player: Edmonds shined most of the afternoon on a dreary, rainy day in East Rutherford, N.J. He might have dropped a couple passes and missed an assignment on a Giants’ blocked punt of teammate Andy Lee, but he came up huge for Arizona when coaches obviously felt David Johnson wasn’t healthy enough for anywhere near a regular workload.

Edmonds took advantage of some huge holes opened up by the offensive line, and was never in danger of being tackled on any of his three rushing touchdowns.

Johnson had one carry for 2 yards and spent most of the game on the sideline, standing next to coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Key injuries: Reddick was injured upon recovering a fumble, but the extent of his injury wasn’t immediately known.

Up next: The Cardinals stay on the road, this time traveling to New Orleans to meet the Saints this Sunday. Kickoff is 10 a.m. at Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
