At his Monday press conference, Harbaugh doubled down on his starting quarterback, going so far as to use the term "heroic" to describe Patterson's play.

"I think Shea has been playing great football. Heroic even," Harbaugh said. "I've been really pleased. He's really into it. His whole demeanor in the game - confident, excited about it, likes to be in that atmosphere and playing in that type of game. Can sense it in everything about him."

The PSU team that dominated the first half was flat for the majority of the second half. Other than a 53-yard touchdown bomb from Sean Clifford to K.J.

Jim Harbaugh talked to WXYZ after the 28-21 loss to Penn State , and said he sees Shea Patterson playing at the next level. Harbaugh also said he believes Shea Patterson is terrific and sees him playing in the NFL. Brad Galli has more with the coach in the weekly 'Inside the Huddle' segment.

Patterson's numbers against the Nittany Lions were not wowing by any stretch - 24-of-41, 276 yards, no touchdowns, one interception - but the senior looked more confident on Saturday night then he had in any previous contest, maybe outside of the Rutgers game.

Patterson's legs got him into trouble on a couple of plays, but he also showed the escape ability we saw from him last season. The senior scrambled for a first down early in the game, and kept other plays alive with his legs and eventually found open receivers downfield.

On Michigan's final offensive snap, 4th and goal with a chance to tie the game, Patterson stepped up and to his right to avoid pressure before delivering a dart right on the money to Ronnie Bell, who dropped the ball.

Michigan's Jim Harbaugh questions 'interesting' officiating calls in loss to Penn State Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh questioned some calls that went against the Wolverines in a 28-21 loss at No. 7 Penn State. After the game, Harbaugh was asked a question about the offense's final play, a failed fourth-and-goal attempt from Penn State's 3 that could've tied the game at 28 with just over two minutes left in the fourth.

Harbaugh and the Wolverines continue to flop against elite teams. No. 16 Michigan and coach Jim Harbaugh again wound up on the losing end against a top-10 opponent Saturday, a 28-21 defeat at No. 7 Penn State . You can blame quarterback Shea Patterson , untimely drops by the receivers or

That drop was the sixth of the night by Michigan's receivers. In addition, wide receiver Nico Collins was called for a debatable offensive pass interference early in the game on a play that would have resulted in an explosive play.

"I thought he had a heroic type of ball game, in particular, in this last game," Harbaugh said. "He's playing really good football. Game in and game out, consistently good."

Prior to this past weekend's game, Patterson has mostly looked uncomfortable on the field, and there are a variety of possible explanations.

Josh Gattis is the seniors' fourth offensive coordinator in his four years of college football. Patterson played two seasons in a spread offense at Ole Miss, before running a pro-style offense during his first season at Michigan, only to switch again to this season's offense that features West Coast passing schemes within an overall spread concept.

Then Shea Patterson ’ s pass found its way to Ronnie Bell’s gut as a defender menaced just behind and Harbaugh ’s arms went upward in celebration. Another possible explanation is the oblique injury Patterson suffered in the season-opener against Middle Tennessee State. Maybe that injury and the lingering effects shook the senior's confidence.

Against Army, Patterson was strip sacked twice in the first half. His ball security could be criticized on the first of those, but Patterson had no chance to hang onto the ball on the second. Perhaps those results left Patterson struggling to trust his young, inexperienced tailbacks - Zach Charbonnet, Christian Turner and Hassan Haskins are all freshman - in pass protection scenarios.

The truth is likely that it's the total combination of all these factors that have led to less than desirable results for Michigan's starting quarterback.

On the season, Patterson has thrown for 1,522 yards, on 116-of-202 passing (54.4 percent) with nine touchdowns and four interceptions. Most would say (and many have) that those numbers aren't good enough, but Harbaugh's support of Patterson remains firm.

"People that don't really know what it's like to be a player…in the arena, they like to scream at the TV and yell stuff, and they don't know, and they just want to get their emotions out or their passions out," Harbaugh said. "That's kind of what keeps football as popular as it is, that people have those kind of passions toward that game. In that way, that's the positive."
