Fifth-ranked LSU scored three straight touchdowns after falling behind early in the second half to emerge with a 42-28 victory over No. 7 Florida on Saturday.BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Joe Burrow passed for 293 yards and three touchdowns, and fifth-ranked LSU scored three straight touchdowns after falling behind early in the second half to emerge with a 42-28 victory over No. 7 Florida on Saturday night.
This was a close one ... until it wasn't.
Auburn bounces back, but did it improve enough to take down LSU?
Concern about the freshman Nix remains legit, but he looked much, much better. Most noticeable was his accuracy on deep balls. After Auburn jumped to a 17-0 lead, before Arkansas mustered its initial first down, the Tigers stalled for the rest of the first half. But Nix opened the second half off with a pair of perfect touchdown strikes: 48 yards to Seth Williams and 28 to Anthony Schwartz to answer Arkansas’ first score. He would add one more before the day was done. That’s palpable progress.Against an undersized Arkansas front, the Auburn defense controlled the game.
Joe Burrow led yet another comeback against Auburn as LSU pulled away with a 23-20 win after a third-quarter deficit.
It seemed like the visiting No. 9 Tigers could have pulled off an upset, especially after a goalline stand with 8:30 left in the third quarter and a 13-10 lead. But there's a reason the hosting Tigers are undefeated.
Burrow and company remained composed and collected down the stretch, despite a few hiccups, and continue to hold a commanding advantage in this series (19-5-1).
After all, history wasn't in Auburn's favor. Its last win in Baton Rouge was a 41-7 victory all the way back in 1999.
Three takeaways from No. 2 LSU's comeback win over No. 9 Auburn
LSU overcame more than it wanted too
Sure, this win wasn't going to be easy but LSU had to work just a little bit harder than it wanted to grind out a victory against Auburn.
The Legend of Joe Burrow began at Auburn at about 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 15, 2018
LSU QB Joe Burrow was just a normal guy until he threw a 71-yard touchdown in the 4th quarter to WR Derrick Dillon at Auburn to spark a 22-21 winCollege Football Head Coaches' Salaries: LSU's Ed Orgeron is No.
The visiting Tigers brought one of, if not the best, defensive lines LSU has faced this season to Death Valley. Auburn's defense is led by linemen Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson and is one of the toughest tests Burrow and the hosting Tigers have had to face so far in 2019.
Auburn entered the game allowing an average of nearly 17 points. It has yet to give up more than 24 in a game this year and after this tough matchup, it still hasn't.
LSU came up one point shy of scoring the most points against this defense.
Joe Burrow had yet another big game
Burrow has been good, really good, as LSU holds the No. 2 spot. He has especially been good against Auburn.
His first big moment for the team came at Auburn last season. He led a comeback victory that was highlighted by a field goal as the clock expired. Well, Burrow was put in a very similar position Saturday and again, he came out on top.
Although it didn't end with a nail-biting field goal attempt, it showed Burrow can continue to withstand pressure.
Burrow's 321 yards help No. 2 LSU down No. 9 Auburn, 23-20
Second-ranked LSU edged No. 9 Auburn 23-20 on Saturday. BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Joe Burrow passed for 321 yards and a touchdown, ran for another score, and second-ranked LSU edged No. 9 Auburn 23-20 on Saturday.
He finished 32-of-42 passing for 321 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Burrow also ran for his third rushing touchdown of the year. He finished with 31 yards on the ground after 13 carries.
Auburn just needed a little bit more from Bo Nix
There's certainly still room for Nix to improve. But against LSU's defense, which is equally as talented as Auburn's, Nix did well. He just needed to do a little bit more.
The past two weeks, Nix has led a seemingly good offense, especially considering the fluke at Florida where the freshman was intercepted three times. Nix, however, bounced back and almost completed an upset over LSU until it broke away with the game in the fourth quarter.
LSU gave Auburn plenty of opportunities, especially late in the game, to make a comeback, but Auburn just wasn't able to execute late in the game.
Nix finished 15-of-35 passing for 157 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also got a score on the ground but finished with minus-16 yards on nine carries.
