Drexler said it was “yet to be determined” if Olajuwon actually could throw a baseball.

As it turns out, Olajuwon can throw a baseball … kind of.

Olajuwon had the temerity to step on top of the mound for his first pitch – others often opt to throw from the front of the mound – and delivered a throw with semi-proper form in Drexler’s direction, who was crouched behind home plate. The ball sailed wide left and bounced in the dirt, but Drexler got a glove on it and Olajuwon had a big laugh as he walked forward to meet Drexler for an embrace.

The pair handled the first pitch as a salute to the 1995 Rockets championship team that went down 2-0 to the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference semifinals – losing both games at home – only to come back and win the series and go on to win the franchise’s second championship.

The Astros faced similar circumstances dropping the first two games of the World Series to the Nationals only to come back and have a shot to win its second championship at home.

“You could see the disappointment last week,” Olajuwon said. “And just to see that turn around, and to be in this position to close it. You can imagine the players, that was pressure. But this is an ideal situation to do it at home.”
