Instead, the Bulldogs showcased other features that could make the difference in a potential run to a second conference championship (and, perhaps, their second College Football Playoff berth) in three years.

No. 8 Georgia defeated No. 6 Florida with timely third-down execution from its quarterback and a swarming run defense in a 24-17 victory.

Jake Fromm completed 10 of 13 third-down passes for 119 yards, including the game-sealing 22-yard pass to Eli Wolf with 2:45 remaining. The defense allowed just 21 rushing yards on 19 attempts and was able to rattle a one-dimensional Gators' offense. Now, the Bulldogs (7-1, 4-1 SEC) are alone in first in the SEC East with their Playoff hopes still alive. The Oct. 12 loss to South Carolina won't matter if Georgia can stretch that lead with another victory against Missouri next week.

Georgia first will face the Gators, followed by Mizzou, Auburn (on the road) and Texas A&M — all of which play pretty good defense — along with the rivalry game in Atlanta against Georgia Tech.

Jake Fromm and Georgia 's offense has struggled to connect on downfield passes this year, and With just under six minutes remaining in Florida 's 42-28 loss to LSU three weeks ago, Gators Georgia is averaging a staggering 236.86 rushing yards per game and 6.07 yards per catch -- both

Georgia did that with the same grind-it-out-style that should keep it in the top six in the first Playoff rankings, which will be unveiled on Thursday. The Bulldogs entered this top-10 showdown with a curious stat: Since Kirby Smart's second season in 2017, Georgia was 25-0 when it averaged 5.0 yards per carry, and was 5-6 when it didn't hit that number. In other words, the notion was the Bulldogs were too dependent on that running game.

Well, Georgia had nine carries for 7 yards after one quarter and 20 carries for 74 yards — or 3.7 yards per carry — at halftime. Yet the Bulldogs led 13-3 at that point for two more important reasons, one that held up through four quarters.

Fromm (20 of 30, 279 yards, two touchdowns) hit the big passes on third down. He was 7 of 10 for 78 yards and a touchdown on third down in the first half, including two conversions of 10 yards or more. A 12-yard pass to Lawrence Cager set up the only touchdown of the first half, which fittingly came on third-and-goal to Dominick Blaylock.

Burning questions for CFB's biggest Week 10 games

Burning questions for CFB's biggest Week 10 games The past three weekends of college football have each delivered a stunning top-10 upset to shake up the College Football Playoff and conference standings. Now Week 10 is here and everyone is hoping Saturday’s matchups will do the same.© Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY SportsWeek 10 of the season features an SEC East clash between No. 8 Georgia and No. 6 Florida. The excitement doesn’t end there. Kansas and Kansas State will battle it out for the Governor’s Cup. Meanwhile, TCU and Oklahoma State will be exchanging blows in a conference battle with explosive potential.

No. 9 Georgia and No. 6 Florida will play for the second straight year with higher stakes than usual. If we win, we've just got to do our job from that point on. Fromm and a young group of receivers made the plays in the big moments in the big game; that's a sign of maturity that wasn't there in the debacle against the Gamecocks. Georgia's defense also shut down Florida, allowing quarterback Kyle Trask to complete 21 of 33 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns but limiting the Gators to 2 of 9 on third-down attempts.

When Florida did cut the deficit to 16-10 with a 23-yard touchdown connection between Trask and Van Jefferson, Fromm answered with a 52-yard touchdown pass of his own to Cager, giving the Bulldogs a 24-10 lead with 10:01 remaining. That was more than enough cushion for Georgia to keep Florida away in the game's final minutes.

Georgia's methodical approach might not come with same pile-on features as Alabama and LSU, but it was more than good enough against the Gators. It also has the Bulldogs in a familiar November position, despite their remaining cross-division games against Auburn and Texas A&M (which could serve as resume-padding wins).

Even better, if Georgia wins like this. The running game finished with 37 rushing attempts for 119 yards (3.2 yards per carry). The Bulldogs still gobbled up 35:48 in time of possession, and didn't need the running clock to close it out.

Instead, it was Fromm, who now has 30 wins as a starter. He has Georgia right where it needs to be.

That was the biggest statement of all.
