OBJ defends Mayfield, takes some responsibility for Browns' struggles

OBJ defends Mayfield, takes some responsibility for Browns' struggles Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. shielded Baker Mayfield from criticism Thursday amid the quarterback's substandard first half of the season. "You can't sit here and say it's all on him," Beckham said in reference to the critique of Mayfield, according to ESPN's Jake Trotter. "You have to take a look at everything going on around him. Obviously, he has to play better. I have to play better. Jarvis (Landry) has to play better. (Nick) Chubb. We all have to do better." Beckham and Mayfield have both struggled so far in 2019, with the latter failing to build upon his successful rookie campaign.

Odell Beckham has for the second time this week articulated his issues with the NFL’s uniform policy, arguing this time that its enforced arbitrarily and only “15 percent” of players actually comply with it.

Beckham’s latest gripe over the NFL’s policy arose when the league made the Cleveland Browns wide receiver change out of a pair of Joker cleats at halftime during last Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos.

On Thursday, Beckham doubled down on his previously stated problems with the policy.

Odell Beckham's Comments After Browns-Patriots Prove Exactly Why Giants Traded Him

Odell Beckham's Comments After Browns-Patriots Prove Exactly Why Giants Traded Him When the New York Giants shockingly decided to send their best player in Odell Beckham Jr. to Cleveland, the organization was looked at with disgust. How could they let OBJ leave town? What a bunch of clowns! Eight weeks into the new season, the tone has 100% changed. Things have been anything but smooth for Beckham Jr. and the Browns, as they're now 2-5 following a disheartening loss to the Patriots on Sunday. “I feel bad, but I really just don’t care. It’s not just me. I see players from the last game with pants that are on their thighs, but the tights are underneath so it’s like it’s all good,” Beckham said, via Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal. “I don’t want to get anybody else in trouble, but I see people wearing lime green and their colors, there’s no team in the NFL that’s lime green except Seattle. Sorry to my brother, I know you know who I’m talking about.

“I’m not really out here to hurt anybody by the cleats that I’m wearing. The (uniform) schedule changed, there was nothing I could really do. I’ll try my best to be like the other 15 percent of the NFL who follows the rules and then we’ll go from there.”

Last week’s incident is the third time Beckham has run afoul of league uniform policy this season. His much ballyhooed decision to wear an expensive watch during the Browns’ Week 1 game resulted in a fine (not to mention ultimately an endorsement deal). Beckham also insisted at the time that he was being targeted by the league with the scrutiny.

Where will Odell Beckham be playing in 2020?

Where will Odell Beckham be playing in 2020? Browns receiver Odell Beckham has vowed that 2020 will be the best year of his life. And so the next question becomes whether he’ll be playing for the Browns during the best year of his life. If Beckham decides to utilize some of the power that NFL players have acquired in recent years, he could end up talking or tweeting his way out of Cleveland, regardless of whether the Browns want him to go.

Beckham was then cited for another uniform violation in Week 6 because his uniform pants did not cover his knees.

Given Beckham’s obvious beef with NFL uniform policy — and refusal to comply with it — it’s likely this is not the last time we hear from the enigmatic wideout on the topic.
