MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jamal Mashburn Jr. has signed his national letter of intent with Minnesota. The 6-foot-2 guard from Miami, a consensus four-star and top-100 recruit, is the son of Jamal Mashburn. The 11-year NBA standout played at Kentucky from 1990-93 for coach Rick Pitino, whose son, Richard Pitino, is the coach at Minnesota. Mashburn Jr. is in his second season at Brewster Academy, a prep school in New Hampshire. Rick Pitino has reached a deal to coach Greece’s men’s national basketball team, the Greek Basketball Federation said in a statement on Friday.
The former Louisville coach will be introduced formally on Monday at a news conference outside Athens.

Ancient cup given to 1st marathon victor returned to Greece
An ancient Greek cup awarded as a prize to the marathon winner in the first modern Olympics of 1896 has been returned to Athens from a German university. Greece’s Culture Ministry says the 6th century B.C. pottery vessel was considered lost for decades until research in 2014 by archaeologist Giorgos Kavvadias identified it in the University of Muenster’s collections.
His first task is to qualify Greece for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Greece will play in a qualifying tournament in June after falling short of Olympic qualification at the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China. It is unlikely that Milwaukee star Giannis Antetokounmpo will be available for that qualifying tournament unless the Bucks somehow miss the NBA playoffs or are eliminated in the first or second rounds.
Pitino coached Greek team Panathinaikos last year, leading it to Greek League and Greek Cup championships. He did not return to the team for the 2019-20 season.
Pitino was fired from Louisville two years ago amid a federal investigation into the basketball program. Last month, the Louisville Athletic Association, who filed a breach of contract lawsuit seeking nearly $40 million. As part of the agreement, Pitino’s departure from the school is considered a resignation.
Kentucky's No. 1 ranking will have others 'trying to take our heads off'
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Sophomore Immanuel Quickley drew a big laugh when asked his reaction to Kentucky being voted No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 poll released on Monday. "Well, we haven't been No. 1 that long," he said. "I think it's been, like, 20 minutes." When the reporters' laughter subsided, Quickley acknowledged that a No. 1 ranking can inspire opponents. For instance, it inspired Kentucky against then No. 1 Michigan State in the season’s opening game.“Definitely,” Quickley said. “Just the atmosphere of that game. We knew it was a big game. … We knew what was on the table.”Teammate Kahlil Whitney said he expected Kentucky to be voted No. 1.
