David Ross' 1st Cubs coaching staff is taking shape. Now Theo Epstein will start renovation work on roster at GM meetings. The reckoning Cubs President Theo Epstein threatened last winter if the team underachieved in 2019 is well underway, with new manager David Ross in place and his coaching staff under construction. As the general managers meetings begin Monday in Scottsdale, Ariz., Epstein will begin to focus more on the reconstruction of the Cubs roster. Rumors of big-name departures have begun with an ESPN report that the Cubs are shopping catcher Willson Contreras. Contreras won’t be alone.

And trade talks heat up. And extension season follows. Here is everything you need to know about it all: the biggest names, the biggest dollars, true stars Yup. Multiple teams in search of catching help believe Contreras will be available this winter, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan, who reports the Cubs will get creative this winter and could trade the 27-year-old All-Star as they begin to retool under new manager David Ross.

The Contreras trade rumor comes a month after Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein wouldn't rule out dealing one of the catcher's teammates in Kris Bryant or Javier Baez with the organization "at a transition point."

He spent four years there until the team placed the franchise tag upon him and then later reversed course allowing him to become a free agent. Washington signed him to a five-year deal worth $75 million in April of 2016. Pelissero notes that the cornerback is owed almost $6 million for the rest of the season. He has one year remaining on his contract worth $15.5 million but any team would be able to get out from underneath the deal by paying his $3 million signing bonus after the season.

Cubs believe Ross is 'right guy for this moment in time'. Ross joins Cubs ' quest to put 2016 in rear view mirror. Jed Hoyer did say earlier this week the Cubs will be adding depth before the trade deadline, but the asking price for arguably the best available reliever remaining on the market could

Since winning the World Series in 2016, the Cubs haven't been able to advance past the National League Championship Series and they missed the playoffs last season.

Additionally, Joe Maddon recently departed as the team's manager, its payroll is nearing $200 million, and the farm system is bare.

Dealing Contreras, who posted a .888 OPS with 24 home runs in 105 games last season and isn't eligible for free agency until 2023, could net the Cubs a large stockpile of prospects and possibly prevent them from dealing one of Bryant or Baez.

Since 2017, Contreras has been one of MLB's top offensive catchers, ranking fourth in homers (55), fifth in RBIs (192), and tied for second in wRC+ (115), according to FanGraphs.

Contreras is also eligible for arbitration for the first time in 2020 and is projected to only make $4.5 million.

Pittsburgh, clearly, was the most surprising possible destination mentioned by Bell. He just left the Steelers organization after a tumultuous 2018 in which he sat out the season rather than play on the franchise tag.
