"We’ve been made aware of the tragic event and extend our deepest sympathies to the family who lost a loved one," Washington said in its statement. "Our team has alerted the league office and is cooperating with local authorities. TMZ Sports first reported the incident.

A spokesperson for the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office did not immediately reply to an email seeking additional information Friday morning. The Washington Post reported that Nicholson declined to comment through an attorney.

Nicholson, 23, did not practice Thursday. A fourth-round draft pick out of Michigan State in 2017, he has started 20 games over parts of three seasons in the NFL. He's missed the past two games with an ankle injury.
