San Diego State's basketball team practiced at a local high school the day before facing No. 1-ranked Duke at the Maui Invitational last year. The gym was located on a side of dormant volcano above Lahaina, with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, of other islands in the Hawaiian chain, of breaching whales in the channel.

Jordan Schakel was looking at none of that as the team bus descended into town. He was looking for outdoor basketball courts.

Jordan Schakel is an elite student-athlete currently attending Bishop Montgomery High School in metropolitan Los Angeles. The 6’6 shooting guard is Can you tell us how things are going for Cal Supreme as a team and for you individually? JS: As a team we have been playing well together and

Not one turnover, seems to handle the ball good, and a quick release with moves to get the shot off. who was the 6-10 ish guy in line behind him? We have had over the years a ton of guys whose shooting goes Tierra Del Fuego south for months at a time.

He saw one at a junior high school and made a mental note. After returning to the hotel and being excused for the evening, he and his parents loaded into their rental car and tried to find the court so he could get in some extra shooting at dusk. The court was fenced in and locked.

"So we drove around and found another one on Google Maps," Schakel says. "I made sure I brought my ball. I always have an outdoor ball with me, so I'll never be without it."

The 6-foot-6 junior from Torrance has a silky shooting stroke modeled after Golden State's Klay Thompson, a wide base, a high motion, a quick release, an exaggerated follow through with his wrist. But that's not why he's among the most accurate marksmen in college basketball, why he made 5 of 5 3-pointers in the second half at BYU last week without so much as touching the rim, why through three games he's shooting 71.4 percent (fourth in Division I) even though the arc was extended this season to the international distance of 22 feet, 1¾ inches.

This is: "A lot of hours."

At SDSU's 12,414-seat Viejas Arena and rutted asphalt courts without nets. At home and on the road. Before and after practice. With teammates and with nobody. In daylight and, yes, in pitch darkness.

"No days off," says Schakel, who improved from 34.6 percent as a freshman to 41.5 percent last season. "In May, I promised myself I wouldn't take a day off from shooting. I haven't."

"If you are a shooter," says Stefanie Schakel, his mother and a former all-American volleyball player at USC, "you've got to shoot."

She has the bags under her eyes to prove it. During his freshman year of year at Bishop Montgomery High, Schakel noticed that star teammate Ethan Thompson would go to a local gym after practice with his father Stephen, who played at Syracuse and in the NBA, to get in an extra workout. He figured he had to do the same and "begged my dad," who didn't play in college or the NBA, to find a gym.

The Thurston High School shooting took place on May 21, 1998. Expelled student Kip Kinkel first murdered his parents before engaging in a school shooting at Thurston High School in Springfield

An L.A. Fitness about 20 minutes away by car had a court. There was a regular pick-up game at 7 a.m. on weekdays, so Schakel would go at 5:30 a.m. when it was empty.

"The night before, I'd go to my parents and say: 'Which one of you is rebounding for me tomorrow?'" Schakel says. "It's honestly amazing they never told me no. They were up with me every day."

"My husband and I used to think, one day he'll actually sleep in," Stefanie says. "Silly us … He just came wired that way, you know? I can't explain it. It's always been there. He's always been a hard worker. He loves the game, and you have to. Otherwise, why would you keep getting up?"

He'd take a quick shower, grab an egg sandwich and head to school. Then basketball practice. Then homework. Then back to a local park or gym for more shooting.

Sometimes the sun would be down. No problem. He wants to shoot in the dark.

Sometimes he could hear the thunk of the ball splashing through the chain-link net. Sometimes there was no net, and his father would have to tell him if the ball when through.

"You can't see really the basket," Schakel reasons, "so I figure if I can shoot in the dark when I can't see, it gives you a lot of confidence when the lights are on … Shooting is about reps, and believing. It's all in your mind."

Woman shot in head while driving on North Loop

Woman shot in head while driving on North Loop A woman was shot while driving along the North Loop early Friday, police say. She was driving a black SUV while her boyfriend rode in the passenger seat when they turned onto North Loop 610 eastbound from Interstate 45 North southbound around 2 a.m., according to Houston Police Department Lt. Ronnie Wilkins. The boyfriend told police that he heard several “pops” and ducked for cover, thinking that they were under fire, Wilkins said. When he looked up, he saw his girlfriend was unconscious and bleeding from her head. The boyfriend managed to safely pull the car over from the passenger seat and call 911, Wilkins said.

Learn about Jordan Schakel and other recruit player profiles on Strengths: Schakel is one of the better looking wing-types in Southern California for his class. He plays for an excellent coach who emphasizes fundamentals, toughness, and efficiency.

It explains why last week, when the Aztecs practiced in a darkened JAM Center because of a campus-wide power outage, Schakel's shot was just as accurate.

Malachi Flynn nods. He knows. He is Schakel's roommate, which makes sense given their shared fixation with "getting some shots up," which is code for waking up before sunrise – this is a college campus, remember – and heading to the JAM Center for a workout before morning classes.

"Some people are born with it," Flynn says of the hand-eye coordination necessary to fling a 9½-inch diameter ball through an 18-inch diameter hoop 25 feet away. "But you have to put in the work to be a good shooter, whether or not you're born with it. It's every day. It's a daily thing. You can't take days off if you want to be great."

Schakel won't. They know the open gym schedules of every rec center in a 25-mile radius of their Torrance home. He packed a basketball on family vacations. On AAU trips, he made his parents drive around looking for courts.

"I can tell you where there are neighborhood courts in Atlanta, in Virginia Beach, Hawaii, wherever," Stefanie says. "It's obsessive."

SDSU assistant coach Dave Velasquez learned the goals Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry try to reach in drills – shooting 10 times from each of 10 spots around the arc and making 90 or more. Schakel will do it over and over and over, until he makes 90.

There can be a law of diminishing returns, however, and in each of his first two seasons Schakel slumped in March. As a freshman, he closed the season 1 of 10 on 3s. As a sophomore, he was shooting 45.8 percent – among the best in the nation – before closing the season 0 of 10.

To combat it, he has tried to substitute quality for quantity in his workouts while building stronger legs to withstand the grind of the college season. In a way, it's a good problem to have. Better to work too hard than not enough.

"We knew Jordan was a hard worker, and that's one of the reasons we recruited him," Aztecs coach Brian Dutcher says. "He works at it every day, almost to a point as a coach where we have to keep him out of the gym. Sometimes you can fatigue your body. Sometimes we have to back him off because we don't want him wearing himself out.

"He's got to play on fresh legs. We have to manage that and make sure he's not out here all the time. Because he'll never leave the gym."
