Report: Clippers targeting next week for PG's return

Report: Clippers targeting next week for PG's return There appears to be a bit more clarity regarding Paul George's long-awaited Los Angeles Clippers debut. The Clippers are targeting one of their games in next week's back-to-back set against the Houston Rockets (Nov. 13) and New Orleans Pelicans (Nov. 14) for George's return, league sources told The Athletic's Sam Amick. If the six-time All-Star plays against the Rockets, he's not expected to suit up against the Pelicans, reports Amick. Paul George hit a go-ahead shot with 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter to lift the Clippers to a 90-88 win over his former Oklahoma City Thunder team on Monday night. The shot wasn’t only significant because it came against the team he forced himself away from in a trade over the summer — it was the same shot he’d struggled with in previous years.

George had never historically been considered clutch, and for good reason: Prior to the start of the 2018-19 season, he was 1-for-12 on go-ahead threes in the final 30 seconds of regulation or in overtime. His crunch-time performances were so cringe-worthy, his heavily-syndicated Gatorade commercial — where he calls “ball game” before hitting a clutch three — seemed more like a joke.

But over the past two seasons, no one hit more clutch threes than Playoff P. George had — four go-ahead threes in the final 30 seconds of regulation or in overtime, which according to ESPN Stats & Info, is twice as many as any player in that time span. He has proved he can come up big when the team needs him most.

That’s great news for the Clippers, and terrible news for the rest of the league.

The Clippers, of course, already have Kawhi Leonard, the best two-way player in basketball. Pairing Leonard and George was thought to be even more of a defensive nightmare (for opposing teams), given both have shutdown ability at positions one through four.

Now, George has decided it’s time to pick up where he left off last season as a pressure performer, alongside a player like Leonard, who has hit pressure shots left and right. (Like the one he hit in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Philadelphia 76ers.)

Kawhi Leonard on Clippers integrating Paul George: Only thing to do is just play

Kawhi Leonard on Clippers integrating Paul George: Only thing to do is just play Eight years later, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard are together. The Clippers forwards were almost teammates when George played for the Indiana Pacers and the team drafted a 19-year-old prospect from San Diego State in 2011. Instead, George watched Leonard grow from afar after the mild-mannered wing player was traded to San Antonio, transformed from a defensive specialist to all-around star and won two NBA championships. Getting to bear witness up close this year hasn't disappointed. "Everything is true about his makeup," George said of Leonard. "Works hard, great teammate, great locker room guy."He actually does talk," George added with a laugh.

Case in point: Leonard didn’t play against the Thunder on Monday night, but George was able to seal the deal.

The Clippers are going to have another adjustment period. George and Leonard have yet to play a game together. The Clippers have been “load managing” Leonard, while George has made his long-awaited return from shoulder surgery. They’re going to have some bumps in the road. Every team does.

But if George is this type of clutch performer all season, it relieves Leonard of the pressures of having to be that go-to guy every possession. If the Clippers have two of the league’s five-best forwards both dominating down the stretch, an already dominant team could become unstoppable.
