But with Matthew Stafford out with a back injury and Jeff Driskel nursing a sore hamstring, the Lions announced Wednesday night that David Blough will make his first career start in Thursday's Thanksgiving game against the Chicago Bears.

Blough, acquired in a late August trade with the Cleveland Browns, has been with the Lions for all of the regular season but has been active only for the last three games, since Stafford fractured bones in his back in a Nov. 3 loss to the Oakland Raiders.

Matthew Stafford ruled out for third straight week

Matthew Stafford ruled out for third straight week Neither the Lions nor quarterback Matthew Stafford have said anything about Stafford missing the rest of the regular season, but the idea of shutting him down because of a back injury is going to remain on the table for the near future. The Lions have ruled Stafford out of Sunday’s game against Washington. It is the third straight game that Stafford has missed after running up a streak of 136 consecutive starts for Detroit.Stafford said this week that there’s no firm timeline for his recovery and that the team’s fading playoff hopes wouldn’t factor into his decision about returning to play this season.

DAVID BLOUGH: Lions QB has magic tricks that will blow your mind

Driskel has started the last three weeks, but he suffered a hamstring injury in last week's loss to the Washington Redskins and was listed as questionable on the Lions' estimated injury report this week.

The Lions, losers of four straight and seven of their last eight, held walk-throughs Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in lieu of full practices.

Lions coach Matt Patricia said Blough has taken some first-team practice reps in recent weeks, though the bulk of that work has gone to Driskel.

"We’ve put him in certain situations," Patricia said. "We have different team periods throughout practice normally when we’re out there. We’ll have competitive periods against offense versus defense, along with our preparation periods that we use each week. We like to take those different kind of chances during the week to mix up some of the huddles, and who’s out there and who’s not. We do it really at all positions, and certainly, Blough is one of those guys that it’s important for us to do that with, too.”

The Lions did not make a move at the quarterback position Wednesday, meaning they have just one healthy quarterback for Thursday's game.

Driskel still could dress as an emergency backup, and Patricia indicated the Lions could alter their gameplan to account for his injury if necessary.

"Obviously, he can stand in the pocket, he can throw, he can do all those things," Patricia said. "There’s no issues there. It just would be some of the things that we would want to build around that, that we would have to take a look at.”

Driskel was optimistic about playing when he met with reporters Tuesday, saying his hamstring made steady improvement since Sunday.

Blough was a full- or part-time starter during all four of his years at Purdue, when he threw for 9,374 yards and 69 touchdowns with 43 interceptions.

Vikings handle Lions 20-7 for ninth victory of season .
Six days after an angst-filled loss in Seattle, the Vikings took care of business against the undermanned Lions, beating Detroit 20-7 at U.S. Bank Stadium. Lions quarterback David Blough was making his second NFL start Sunday and couldn't solve a Vikings defense that was torched in a 37-30 loss to the Seahawks on Monday night. Kirk Cousins threw for 242 yards and a touchdown for the Vikings (9-4), who remained a game behind first place Green Bay in the NFC North. The Vikings' defensive line, which produced nine of the team's 10 sacks of Matthew Stafford at U.S. Bank Stadium last year, again tormented a Lions front it has owned in recent meetings.
