Yankees ’ pitchers make bold statement amid Gerrit Cole buzz. Imagine Cole , who grew up a Yankees fan in Southern California, fulfilling a childhood fantasy and heading a pinstriped rotation. If the Astros finish off the Nats, they’ll enjoy a cash infusion that could be used to try to retain Cole
Gerrit Cole went through a lot to wear the pinstripes eighteen years ago. Then an 11-year old fan at the 2001 World Series in Phoenix wearing a replica jersey, Cole remembered how Diamondbacks fans threw peanuts and hurled insults at him that day.
Now, the Yankees have to find a way to get Cole to want to wear the pinstripes again. Hal Steinbrenner gave Yankees fans hope on that topic this week. In an online tease for an interview with the YES Network, Steinbrenner said that “all options are open as far as I’m concerned,” when asked about aggressively going after top-line free agents like Cole and Stephen Strasburg.
Yankees have no Gerrit Cole backup plan with Zack Wheeler off the market
The Yankees are operating without their safety net now. He added that anything GM Brian Cashman brings to him, he will consider “real seriously.”
I guess eventually we’ll see how serious and aggressive the Yankees will be, but all indications are that they intend to make a big push for Cole, the one-time fan who got away.
Despite the fact that Steinbrenner and Cashman have publicly professed confidence in their starting rotation heading into 2020, there are still plenty of question marks there.
They have to hope Luis Severino’s six-month battle with shoulder and then lat injuries was a fluke and he can return to his 2018 form. They have to hope James Paxton continues to develop like he did in the second half of 2019. The Yankees can be optimistic that Jordan Montgomery will contribute in 2020 and at some point regain his effectiveness after 2018 Tommy John surgery. They have no idea when or if they will have Domingo German, who was suspended last September by MLB as they conducted an investigation into allegations of domestic violence. And they have no idea how they will use J.A. Happ, who struggled in the first year of a two-year deal last season.

It sounds like the Yankees intend to let Andujar earn the third base job during spring training, but there’s The Yankees may have missed out on acquiring Cole , but that doesn’t mean that they can’t still The good news is that Cashman has the prospect depth to make just about any trade happen.
The Yankees failed to sign their 2008 top draft pick when current Houston Astros pitcher Gerrit Cole (left) was a high school senior and they are facing long odds this year of signing touted prep right-hander Jack Leiter, who plans to attend college at Vanderbilt.
So, the Yankees began making their plan for signing Cole last month, delving back into their history with the player that they drafted — and were eventually spurned by — back in 2008 to try and get an edge with their long history with him.
Ultimately, the Yankees know that Cole will make the decision based on the best financial and situation of the offers. The common wisdom in baseball has been that Cole, born and raised on the West Coast, would prefer to return there. The Angels have made it clear they are going to make a strong play for Cole. The Dodgers too have said that they will spend money for the big-name players that fit.
Still, the Yankees think they are in the mix with Cole and his family.
According to a source who has dealt with Cole over the years, the 29-year-old will “make up his own mind. He won’t be going somewhere because his agent tells him to.”
Cole’s agent is the powerful Scott Boras, who does have the tendency to hold his clients back in free agency as they look for the best deal. Most of the time it works. Last winter Bryce Harper missed the first two weeks of spring training, but signed the richest free agent contract in North American sports on Feb. 28.
Report: Gerrit Cole has seven-year, $245 million offer from Yankees
Star free agent pitcher Gerrit Cole has reportedly received a contract offer of seven years and $245 million from the Yankees. While it is possible that Cole signs before the end of the Winter Meetings on Thursday, clients of Scott Boras have tended to sign later in the offseason, so this may be a protracted process with today’s report as a jumping-off point. Both the Yankees’ and Angels’ front offices have received clearance from ownership to break the bank to sign Cole.
The Yankees ’ search for a final piece to their rotation will have to exclude Gerrit Cole . The Yankees had been involved in trade talks involving Cole beginning last month, but their unwillingness to surrender prospects such as Gleyber Torres, Clint Frazier and Miguel Andujar prevented a deal from
Houston Astros starting pitcher Gerrit Cole did not take the mound for his scheduled start against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. Cole felt the discomfort while warming up in the bullpen about 15 minutes prior to the start, per the Chronicle. It is the first known injury of Cole ’s tenure with the Astros .
And the wait could be financially beneficial for Cole, who is also likely to set records with his contract.
The right-hander finished second in the voting for the American League Cy Young after a breakout season. He led the AL in ERA (2.50) and strikeouts (326). After losing five decisions through May 22, Cole did not take a loss the rest of the regular season. The Astros went 27-6 in his starts this year.
He is likely to land the biggest free agent contract by a pitcher in baseball history. A former American League executive said he expects Cole will get at least $33 million and could go as high as $35 million per year over six to seven years. That would best David Price’s seven-year, $213 million deal with the Red Sox.
Cole isn’t the Yankees only option to land a front-line starter.
Strasburg, who opted out of his contract with the Nationals after being named the MVP of the World Series, could be a slightly more economical option. Still, the 31-year-old opted out of a contract that guaranteed him $100 million from 2020-23, so he isn’t exactly going to be a bargain. The feel around baseball is that Strasburg will end up re-signing with the Nationals.

Gerrit Cole will be ending his free agency sweepstakes and signing with x, according to reports.According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, MLB's top free agent will be signing with the New York Yankees.
So instead of adding Gerrit Cole to what would have been an impressive offseason haul, the Yankees now have to The Yankees also have to do this knowing that the Astros didn’t have to pay a premium in order to That makes this doubly disappointing for the Yankees and even better for the Astros
The Astros ended the Yankees ’ season by knocking them off in Game 7 of the ALCS and on Wednesday, Houston owner Jim But Cole ’s presence in Houston undoubtedly makes the defending World Series champions an even bigger threat heading into this season, as Cole joins a rotation that
Former Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler could be the biggest bargain in the free agent class. The Yankees were very interested in him this season, but it was doubtful the Mets would actually trade him — and they turned out to be right.
Any one of these three pitchers would improve the Yankees rotation, but they know that Cole would be the big buy-in that their fans expect.
So, we’ll eventually see how open and serious the Yankees are when this all shakes out.
