The Wolverines stood tough in the face of adversity shortly after halftime, when Gonzaga scored the first eight points after the break in trimming a 36-25 deficit to 36-33.

The Zags even had a chance to tie, but a 3-point try from the top of the circle missed. Teske rebounded, then stopped Michigan’s bleeding with a mid-range basket.

This time, the Wolverines’ tear included scoring 18 of 22 points midway through the first half while turning a deficit into a lead.

Runs like that have been a staple of Michigan this season, and most impressive is Friday’s came from four players – Franz Wagner, Livers, Simpson and Teske.

That kind of scoring balance makes it tough for opponents to hone in on one or two scorers.

“That’s been a trait this season – many players that can score,” Howard said this week. “Up and down the roster, we’ve got scorers.”

JON TESKE FOR PRESIDENT?

It seems like ages ago when Jon Teske couldn’t even stay on the basketball floor for extended periods. He couldn’t keep his body off opponents, but in reality, it was just Wednesday when the Wolverines’ 7-footer couldn’t make it to the first media timeout with collecting two fouls.

He was benched for that first half’s final 16 minutes and wasn’t a tremendous factor in the opening-game win.

Fast-forward to Friday’s championship-game victory against Gonzaga. Teske was so good, that he not only scored 13 points during a first half in which Michigan led 36-25, he played 14 minutes in which he collected just one foul.

BOMBS AWAY

It’s not like Michigan is shy from three-point range, but Friday, the Wolverines took that to another level.

In the second half, for example, they pulled away from a 38-36 lead by making five of seven shots from three-point range. That hot shooting resulted in a 65-47 lead, forced Gonzaga to guard the arc – and open the middle.
