McCann, 29, had a career-high 476 plate appearances this year, but that number may shrink in 2020 with Grandal in the catching mix.

The Sox could also use McCann at designated hitter as part of a rotation with Grandal, Jose Abreu and Zack Collins.

“The addition of a catcher of (Grandal’s) caliber along with Mac, who has certainly helped us move some of these guys along in a very, very positive way, bodes well for us,” Sox manager Rick Renteria said last week.

McCann reached career highs in home runs (18) and RBIs (60) and made the All-Star team for the first time in his career in 2019. He became the Sox first All-Star catcher since A.J. Pierzynski in 2006.
