During that meeting, Schiano detailed a list of potential expenditures that he felt would be the minimum for the school to become competitive in the Big Ten East. This included staff salaries, support staff salaries and facilities upgrades — all of which Rutgers is lagging in, far behind its Big Ten peers.

If ever there was an industry that shrugs at moral outrage, it is college sports. Autumn Saturdays are held sacred for football rivalries, are they not? Spring weekends are the stuff of March Madness. Every now and then, some institutions of higher learning earn a tsk-tsk for cutting corners

Greg Schiano’s journey back to Rutgers has been a bit of a roller coaster, and the low point for him was likely when he agreed to become the head coach at Tennessee only to see the deal fall through. Two years later, Schiano is willing to look back on that and laugh.

Schiano took a shot at Tennessee fans during his introductory press conference with Rutgers on Wednesday. He was asked about fans celebrating the fact that he has returned to New Jersey as opposed to when a fan revolt scuttled his hire at Tennessee.

“I think reflecting on it, just shows Jersey people are a little sharper,” Schiano quipped, per Zach Braziller of the New York Post.

An 8-year contract and unlimited jet use among Greg Schiano’s reported demands from Rutgers A breakup between Rutgers and Schiano leaves both sides portraying the other as the bad guy, but the truth is somewhere in the middle.Schiano’s camp was quick to get the word out Sunday that the breakdown of negotiations between the Knights and their former coach was not about money, and a term sheet circulated among the Rutgers board of governors and obtained by NJ.com shows that was partially true.

Rutgers welcomed back Greg Schiano , saying he is "the right coach at the right time" for the program. Schiano left Ohio State after last season when the Buckeyes struggled on his side of the ball, and he briefly took a job as an assistant with the New England Patriots earlier this year.

Vols fans likely see things much differently. Schiano won at Rutgers in his first go-around, but he has never had an opportunity to show he can win with a program as big as Tennessee’s. In addition to having a personality that rubs a lot of people the wrong way, there are also some who believe Schiano had knowledge of what was going on with Jerry Sandusky when he was an assistant coach at Penn State. Schiano has vehemently denied ever knowing anything about it.

Tennessee was on the verge of having a press conference to announce the Schiano hiring, but fans held protests and successfully squashed the deal. Time will tell if that ended up being a good thing for Rutgers.
