Signs suggest Yankees intend to make big push for Astros’ Gerrit Cole Gerrit Cole went through a lot to wear the pinstripes eighteen years ago. Then an 11-year old fan at the 2001 World Series in Phoenix wearing a replica jersey, Cole remembered how Diamondbacks fans threw peanuts and hurled insults at him that day. Now, the Yankees have to find a way to get Cole to want to wear the pinstripes again. Hal Steinbrenner gave Yankees fans hope on that topic this week. In an online tease for an interview with the YES Network, Steinbrenner said that “all options are open as far as I’m concerned,” when asked about aggressively going after top-line free agents like Cole and Stephen Strasburg.

Report: Gerrit Cole has seven-year, $245 million offer from Yankees

Report: Gerrit Cole has seven-year, $245 million offer from Yankees Star free agent pitcher Gerrit Cole has reportedly received a contract offer of seven years and $245 million from the Yankees. While it is possible that Cole signs before the end of the Winter Meetings on Thursday, clients of Scott Boras have tended to sign later in the offseason, so this may be a protracted process with today’s report as a jumping-off point. Both the Yankees’ and Angels’ front offices have received clearance from ownership to break the bank to sign Cole.

Cole , 29, has denied reports that he hopes to sign with one of the LA clubs because he’s a Southern California native who grew up near Anaheim. If the Yankees sign Cole or Strasburg, they’ll blow by the first and second luxury-tax threshold, and possibly surpass the third, too.
