The thing about Zim is that he’s under contract with the Vikings through next season, but according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport it’s not impossible that the Cowboys could trade for him. This season was Zimmer ’s sixth as the Vikings head coach and it will mark their third playoff appearance (they are the sixth seed Wildcard). Minnesota very famously made it to the NFC Championship Game in 2017 after their miracle win over the aforementioned Sean Payton and ultimately lost to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia

DETROIT, MI - DECEMBER 23: Head coach Mike Zimmer of the Minnesota Vikings looks on in the first quarter against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on December 23, 2018 in Detroit, Michigan. Mike Zimmer is 57-38-1 since taking over the team in 2014. In those six years, the Vikings have made three playoff appearances and won two NFC North titles. Vikings coach Mike Zimmer won't be on the sidelines for Thursday night's game against the Cowboys , general manager Rick Spielman announced Thursday morning. Zimmer underwent emergency eye surgery Wednesday. Priefer is in his sixth season as Vikings special teams coach , and it's his 15th season as an NFL assistant. He has never been a head coach at any level. Priefer was suspended in 2014 for three games after an independent investigation of the organization into claims by former punter Chris Kluwe showed that Priefer made a homophobic remark during the 2012 season.

Of course, convincing the Vikings to trade Zimmer would be difficult. While he has burned through several coordinators in recent years, the team’s outstanding defense and emergence of a reliable offense has kept it near the top of the NFL.

Perhaps, Zimmer could become available for trade if the Vikings suffer a first-round exit in the playoffs. For now, it appears to be another potential option for Jones to pursue after he inevitably fires Garrett.
