Harden has 35 as Rockets down Nuggets 130-104

Harden has 35 as Rockets down Nuggets 130-104 HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden scored 35 points after missing the last game with an injury to lead the Houston Rockets to a 130-104 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night. The Rockets were back to full strength after Harden missed his first game of the season because of a sprained right toe in a loss to New Orleans on Sunday. Clint Capela (bruised heel) and Russell Westbrook (load management) also returned after sitting out on Sunday in the 127-112 defeat. BOX SCORE: ROCKETS 130, NUGGETS 104Houston pushed a small lead to a big advantage with a 19-3 run to start the fourth quarter.

Harden is the most unguardable offensive superstar of this era. How do you stop him? Those who got stops agreed: You don’t. That night, Harden dropped 58 points on Brooklyn. But as tough as it is for a prideful defender, Graham knew focusing on that massive number was only going to make him feel

Harden can use the screen to shake free from his man and drive to the rim. He is arguably the single toughest player to stop on the drive, so NBA defenses typically have no interest in giving up an easy lob, so they often try something else. The defending team can switch the pick-and-roll, for instance.

Philadelphia 76ers coach Brett Brown checked out the defenses that had been used against James Harden this season. He examined the Raptors’ box-and-ones. He looked at the Nets’ zones and the Warriors’ and Nuggets’ midcourt traps.

He did not see anything he liked, at least not as a solution.

“You see people force him right,” Brown said before the Rockets topped the Sixers 118-108 on Friday. “You see people double him early. You see people from time to time play him straight up, so you’re not giving him a steady diet of it. So much of what (the Rockets) do is generated from the attention that people give James and the rest of the people take advantage of it.”

Brown considered his options, dabbled in a few but left with his defense, which excels at taking away what the Rockets do best and more often than any NBA team, defeated.

So how do you stop them? For most teams , there honestly isn't much recourse—as evidenced by the fact that Houston is now 38-2 in games where all three of Harden , Paul, and Clint Capela are present. Any team that spaces the floor and launches up threes without hesitation can be punishing.

After his freshman year, Harden was named first team All-Pac-10 and was named to the conference all-freshman team .[6] He was also named first team All-District by the On December 31, 2016, Harden recorded yet another triple-double with 53 points, 17 assists and 16 rebounds in a 129–122 win over

“You’ve seen box-and-ones,” Brown said. “You’ve seen zones. You watch what Golden State did. You watch what Toronto did. I’m interested in all of it. You do your homework. We have Joel Embiid and say Golden State didn’t. We have Ben Simmons. What does that mean? You pick and choose and derive a game plan based on doing the studies. But he sure has seen a lot of different looks, especially recently.”

Brown decided to mix up his defenses, trapping Harden later in the shot clock as the Clippers had but staying with what works well for the Sixers with their unusual length on the perimeter at the rim. He had defenders out at the 3-point line, Embiid waiting in the lane and often a second defender with great length, usually Simmons, packing the paint.

The 76ers allow the fewest 3-pointers in the NBA, just 9.8 per game. The Rockets average the most, making 15.6. But while Philadelphia effectively defended the 3-point line — other than Harden, the Rockets made just 6 of 20 3-pointers — Harden found the openings in the defense and picked it apart.

Harden nets 44 in triple-double, Rockets beat 76ers 118-108

Harden nets 44 in triple-double, Rockets beat 76ers 118-108 HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden had 44 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists to lead the Houston Rockets to a 118-108 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night. On a “Flashback Friday” night in which the Rockets wore their retro ketchup-and-mustard uniforms from their back-to-back NBA title days in the mid-90s, Harden sported a retro look of his own, with a white headband and cornrows. With Philadelphia threatening late, Harden knocked down a deep step-back 3-pointer over Josh Richardson with 1:17 left in the game that put Houston up 10. On the next possession, he found Clint Capela with an alley-oop for a thunderous dunk.

As to how to stop Harden now, Ariza said "I don’t know, but I’ll figure out a way to slow him down.” "I think you can put together a list of about 28 other teams that don't have an answer either," Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni said. "There is no answer . He's seen it all.

He scored 44 points with 11 assists, mixing his own 6-of-12 3-point shooting with lobs to Clint Capela. With that, Brown was left feeling as if there were no good options.

“Where do I begin?” Brown said. “Just his ability to create the attention. You never feel comfortable that you’re close enough. (Harden) dribbles two feet over halfcourt, and you still don’t feel like you’re close enough. Then you try to get close, but he’s strong enough and good enough to go by you and then Capela gets behind your head for the lobs, and so the package is lethal.”

Harden’s average of 38.4 points per game would be the most for a season since Wilt Chamberlain averaged 44.8 in 1962-63 and would be tied for the third-most in NBA history. His 7.6 assists per game would top his 7.5 last season for the most for a player averaging 35 or more points.

Despite the myriad of defenses devoted to getting the ball into anyone else’s hands, Harden’s scoring could be sustainable.

The Rockets have been better at attacking defenses devoting two players to Harden, as Brown pointed out when discussing his options. Harden is on the best streak of shot-making of his career, allowing him to continue scoring when he does not get open looks, as he did on consecutive 3-pointers over tight coverage of Al Horford and Josh Richardson to seal Friday’s win.

The Atlanta Hawks and Houston Rockets guards combined to become the first two players in NBA history to record 40-point triple-doubles in the same game, courtesy of ESPN Stats and Info. Harden, whose Rockets pulled out the 122-115 win, had 41 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in 40 minutes. Young edged Harden's scoring output slightly, pouring in 42 points to go with 13 rebounds and 10 assists. While both stars are known for lighting it up from deep, neither was particularly stellar from 3-point range.

James Harden has become an occupational hazard for referees. Earlier this month, the Jazz were up seven on the Rockets with just over a minute to play “That said, we focused more on their overall efficiency than how people have to foul them to stop them.” Teams will do their best to stop Harden

“You see that a lot when people force him to the right,” Brown said. “He’s so used to it. I think (with) his desire and his skill, you force him to the right and he goes a few dribbles to the right and steps back and shoots it. Nobody forces him left (or) he’s a straight line to the rim. I’m always taken aback when you’re up close to him that, physically, he’s just a big man. So, he can get his shot off. He can go body-body ball and get into you and step back.”

In his past 11 games, Harden has averaged 39.3 points on 52.7 percent shooting — 49.6 on 3-pointers. He has made at least half his shots in a career-high seven consecutive games.

Harden’s 38.6 percent 3-point shooting and 46.3 percent overall are the best of his eight seasons with the Rockets, second-best of his career.

“Just because of the schedule, he’s gotten a little more rest,” Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said when asked of Harden’s run. “(With) a couple of days between some games, once he has his legs, he’s really good. When he’s a little tired, I think he comes down a little bit.”

When Harden has enjoyed two days of rest, as with Friday’s win, he has averaged 42.1 points, making 45.5 percent of his 3s. With one day of rest, he has averaged 37.1 points on 36.9 percent 3-point shooting. In the three games that have followed his back-to-backs, he has averaged 33 points, making 34 percent of his 3s.

When the Rockets face Atlanta on Wednesday, he will have been off for four days, putting Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce next to choose between bad options.

“I mean, (he’s) really good,” D’Antoni said. “He’s one of the best ever.”

Stopping and putting the ball between his legs, he had Robert Covington off balance and leaning the wrong way, but paused for a second, as if to give his opponent a chance. Then, as soon as Covington was back in a set defensive stance, Harden went back between his legs the other way, sidestepped out of his reach and rained in one of his patented 3s.
