Now NFL rushing leader, Derrick Henry his own worst critic

Now NFL rushing leader, Derrick Henry his own worst critic No one is a harsher critic of Titans running back Derrick Henry than himself. “I just want to do my job very well,” Henry said Wednesday. “If I don't, I'm hard on myself. I just keep working until I get it right.” The NFL rushing leader and first-time Pro Bowl running back will get a chance Saturday night to improve on his last performance against the Patriots in the playoffs. Henry ran 12 times for 28 yards — a 2.3-yard average per carry — with nothing over 4 yards. He did catch three passes for 21 yards, but the Titans lost 34-14 in the divisional round on Jan. 13, 2018. He ran better the last time Tennessee played New England, averaging 5.

As the Titans head to Baltimore this weekend to face the No. 1 seed Ravens, the task in front of them is daunting. Some might even say otherworldly.

Opinion: Reed digs himself a hole that will be hard to escape Patrick Reed needed a 12-foot birdie putt to win at Kapalua and return at least some attention to his bullish brand of golf. It was an untimely miss in so many ways. Not only did it give Justin Thomas a third chance in the playoff, which he won with a sublime sand wedge to 3 feet for birdie, it was enough time for one fan to shout the word that so many others have only whispered. “He’s from Mars,” Titans defensive lineman Jurrell Casey said of Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. “He’s definitely an outer-space guy.

A similar sentiment was pushed in Baltimore this week about the challenge the Ravens (14-2) face Saturday (7:15 p.m., CBS) in the AFC divisional round. The Titans (10-7), after all, will arrive at M&T Bank Stadium with a star of their own.

“He's like one of those guys that the kids create on Madden,” Baltimore defensive coordinator Don Martindale said of Titans running back Derrick Henry. “You shouldn't be that big and be able to run like he runs.”

Jackson and Henry are two very different talents who are linked by one common denominator: defenses know they’re coming, they know what they’re going to do, and yet there’s still little they can do to stop them.

Measuring two astronomical seasons

Dean Pees wouldn’t put anyone else in Jackson’s tier.

“I think he’s kind of a class by himself,” the Titans defensive coordinator said. “He’s a phenomenal runner. He’s a different type of runner than (Texans quarterback Deshaun) Watson and all those guys. He could be a tailback for somebody.”

Jackson, the odds-on favorite to win league MVP, had 1,206 rushing yards, which is 662 more than any other quarterback. He also led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes while throwing only six interceptions.

“He’s a great athlete, but he's also a great quarterback,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "He's been a great quarterback throughout, even though he didn't always get acknowledged for that.”

Henry, a 6-foot-3, 247-pound bruiser, used a 211-rushing-yard performance against the Texans in Week 17 to give him a league-high 1,540 for the season. He has averaged 154 rushing yards since Week 10.

He led the league in yards after contact (1,268) and explosive runs (10-plus yards) with 42.

“I’m going to get an extra lift in this week,” Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey told reporters in Baltimore this week, “and see how that works for me."

Wait, seriously?

“I’m actually going to get an extra lift in this week,” Humphrey replied. “I was actually serious about that.”

Slowing down Jackson, the king of the missed tackle

Jackson avoided 42 tackles this season, leading all quarterbacks. The next closest was Buffalo's Josh Allen with 20, per Pro Football Focus.

"Sometimes," Titans linebacker Rashaan Evans said, "I feel like defenders get too caught up in missing him that they are going to miss him or try to do something different from what they’ve done all year, and that’s how you miss tackles. I mean nothing’s going to change about how I’m approaching them."

But yeah, there are going to be some missed tackles.

Pees said he's seen players defend Jackson  "absolutely perfectly and he makes them miss. That’s just athlete on athlete and he did a better job than the guys trying to tackle him.”

What it’s like to feel the wrath of Derrick Henry

What it’s like to feel the wrath of Derrick Henry What it’s like to feel the wrath of Derrick HenryThey watched Henry power the Tennessee Titans past the Patriots and Ravens, into the AFC championship game. As he did, a few of them shared a laugh. Others perused social media, and saw America asking a pertinent question.

Titans coach Mike Vrabel said his focus was getting his players to the point of attack when Jackson has the ball.

"There's a design to the play, and then he just is like, ‘I'm going to go make a play,’" Vrabel said. "So I think that we're all at the point of attack, the 11 guys that are out there when he has the ball."

Added safety Kenny Vaccaro: "It’s assignment football. Everybody’s got to do their job, be in the right gap, and even if you’re in the right gap, Lamar’s going to make some guys miss. They could leave a guy unblocked and he’s going to be dynamic and make his plays. I think as a team, you’ve just got to play really hard, swarm, gang tackle and not necessarily expect one guy to make the tackle."

Harbaugh said he doesn’t think there’s a team that utilizes three tight ends as much as the Ravens do. It’s a scheme that’s been tailored to Jackson.

Tight ends Mark Andrews, Hayden Hurst and Nick Boyle have a combined 1,522 receiving yards and 14 receiving touchdowns.

"When he drops back to pass," Vaccaro said of Jackson, "you can tell he really makes an emphasis not to run, sit in the pocket and kind of makes those tight-window throws that you want a franchise quarterback to make."

Slowing down Henry, the king of the broken tackle

Henry has averaged 33 carries the last two games as the Titans placed the brunt of their postseason hopes on his shoulders.

Henry's unreal prep career: Stats, highlights and the story

Henry's unreal prep career: Stats, highlights and the story Many believe the Titans star is the best running back in the history of high school football. This is why. With at least 123 rushing yards against Kansas City in the title game, Henry would join Terrell Davis and John Riggins, both Pro Football Hall of Famers, as the only players with at least 500 rushing yards in a single postseason in NFL history. With at least 150, he would join Davis as the only players with at least that many rushing yards in three consecutive playoff games.

"I think Derrick trains and prepares to be able to handle that load, to carry that load," Vrabel said. "He’s got a certain skill set that’s size, strength, durability — those are all great qualities for a running back in January."

Harbaugh respects Tennessee's dedication to the run.

"I think they’ve done a great job, coach Vrabel, of building the identity of their whole team and their offense," Harbaugh said. "Most certainly, they don’t make any bones about who they are and what they’re about with the run game."

It only makes sense with the league's leading rusher.

"He’s a cutback runner," Ravens safety Earl Thomas said. "He’s very patient. He’ll find creases. And guys didn’t seem like they were too interested in tackling him. So our mindset is a little different. I think we’re going to try to tackle him and try to swarm, and we’re going to see how it plays out.”

Baltimore safety Chuck Clark was asked if Henry reminds him of anyone else he's had to tackle.

“When you think about it, no," Clark said. "But yes, he's a big running back. When you think about it during the week, you're like, ‘How am I going to get him on the ground?’ But when you're out there in the game, there isn't anything you can think about. You just have to go out there and get him on the ground.”

The Ravens can look back to Week 6 of last season, when among the many things they did well in their 21-0 win over the Titans, their performance against Henry stands out: seven carries, 21 yards.

“We were OK," Martindale said. "We were OK.”

What was the key was that day?

“I think it's just going to be man-on-man football," Martindale said. "He's a talented back. I think adding (quarterback) Ryan Tannehill has done wonders for that offense, because he's the guy we all thought he was. They finally got him in a system that he's operating really well out of. Analytics tell you the most efficient play is the play-action pass, and he's doing that really well. So, it's one of those deals you go into (and say), ‘Hey, let's stop the run. Let's stop the pass. Let's stop the screens. Let's stop this.’ It's just — we have to go play football. It's playoff football.”
