NFL playoff clinching scenarios in Week 17: Breaking down AFC, NFC seeding possibilities
The final week of the regular season could significantly shake up the playoff field in the AFC and NFC, as little is set so far in seeding.
GREEN BAY – The first down that sealed the Packers ’ victory over the Vikings on Sunday was not as simple as it looked. The body control and footwork required under pressure to connect with receiver Davante Adams on the crossing route were tricky, but Rodgers and his top target pulled it off to get

Although both teams clinched a playoff spot , the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers battle in Week 17 for some impactful implications in the postseason
When the first Wild-Card team has been identified, the procedure is repeated to name the second Wild-Card, i .e., eliminate all but the highest-ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. In situations where three or more teams from the same division are involved in the procedure
The play was initially ruled a first down, so the officials needed conclusive video evidence to overturn it. If the play had stood, it was probably going to be the last play of the game, as the Seahawks were out of timeouts. There were multiple angles that the officials were looking at.
These two shots might be one of the most conclusive of all — look at how much of Graham’s body, including the ball, are past the first-down mark:
It took about four minutes, but on the review the officials confirmed that the call for a first down was right, and the play stood. Take a look at where Fox’s yellow line is compared to the first-down marker, too — it’s slightly in front of the actual marker instead of right on it:
Packers battling 'a little bit of sickness' to start Seahawks week
Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur said an illness was going around the building as his team began preparations for Sunday’s playoff showdown with the Seattle Seahawks. Rookie starter Elgton Jenkins missed practice Monday while recovering from the illness, and others missed time during the off week last week. “We’ve had a little bit of sickness going around, so that certainly didn’t help things. Hopefully, we’re healthy and ready to go this Sunday,” LaFleur said Monday. The Packers will host the Seahawks, who beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the wildcard round, on Sunday at Lambeau Field.Illnesses could affect practice time and prep for players and coaches this week.

Even if Graham was slightly short of the yellow line, he probably already crossed the marker anyway.
Another angle the officials were looking at:
What’s strange is that after the play was confirmed as a first down, the official came on the mic again before the next snap to say that “additional footage” came into the replay booth. But that footage still didn’t overturn the play.

The other thing to keep in mind is that this throw was made on third down, so even if the officials called it short, the Packers still could have picked up the first down on fourth and what probably would have been inches.
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was upset with how the review turned out, expectedly:
Pete Carroll was NOT happy with the first down call for the Packers

So does that mean Seahawks coach Pete Carroll erred by calling the timeout? Not according to Carroll, who said he actually told the officials he wanted the timeout before they brought the chains out prior to It became smart when they got the 1 st down . Had they been stuffed, everyone here would
“My guys were just telling me it was short,” Carroll told reporters after the game. “It looked short and had they called him short, then it would’ve been short ... that’s how it goes sometimes.”
Let’s just say Seattle fans weren’t too happy about the spot on Twitter, likewise.
OK cool.— Matt Jeffries (@matty__jeff)
Man— Steve Gallo (@SteveGalloNFL) is just soooooo bad. No question Jimmy Graham was holding the ball below his helmet and the helmet was down at the first down line The got screwed on that spot but I’m sure fans don’t mind.

We’ve seen this type of game-ending controversy before, both in the NFL and college. The Seahawks-Packers touchdown-interception otherwise referred to as thewill go down in history forever. Seahawks catch break when officials flub fumble ruling vs. Packers, double down on mistakeTight end John Hollister fumbled after making a first-quarter catch from Russell Wilson. But officials ruled on the field that he did not. And a combination of flawed replay ruling and poor on-field officiating cost the Packers possession, a timeout and a challenge.
Was 1 st - down marker in right spot as Quick ran? Clemson says it was but acknowledges that crew The rules say the official chain and down indicator are required to be six feet off the sideline, but the use As for the unofficial line-to-gain ground marker, replays throughout the game show that it was
At least, the officials on the field ruled it a first down . This was a game -deciding first down : The Patriots only had to kneel down to run out the clock after that, but if it had been It’s impossible to say by the camera angles CBS showed whether it was the right call or not, but it was definitely the wrong
As long as you have human officials, there are going to be some calls that might look like they could’ve gone the other way, depending on where you stand as a fan. It sure looked like Graham did indeed get the first down on certain angles, and since the catch was ruled a first down on the field, it’s not easy to overturn the call on the field without inconclusive evidence. That’s what happened to the Seahawks on Sunday night.
