Nets ‘big picture’ is about championships ... just not this season

Nets ‘big picture’ is about championships ... just not this season This year doesn’t matter for the Nets — except at a micro level. That’s the takeaway I left with on Saturday when Kyrie Irving addressed the media for the first time since Nov. 14: What the Nets are doing — making a playoff push with an injury-riddled roster — is cute, but this season was over before it ever began. That’s because the Nets signed franchise-altering superstar Kevin Durant knowing he’d be out for the season rehabbing his ruptured Achilles tendon. The Nets over-performed, yet again, with injuries to both Irving and Caris LeVert, before crashing down in their welcome-back-to-reality skid of six losses in their last seven games.

Max Kellerman and Will Cain of First Take both do not have a problem with Charles Barkley ’ s comments saying Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving looks

Kyrie Andrew Irving (/ˈkaɪri/; born March 23, 1992) is an American professional basketball player for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Kyrie Irving ruffled some feathers when he made comments about Brooklyn’s current roster following Wednesday’s loss. Whether it was his remark about the Nets needing to add one or two pieces, or the fact that he mentioned specific players who are, in his mind, part of the solution — himself, Kevin Durant, Garrett Temple, DeAndre Jordan, Caris LeVert, Wilson Chandler, Spencer Dinwiddie — what Irving said sounded similar to what went down in Boston during his tenure with the Celtics.

Some have been critical of the Nets point guard, including Basketball Hall of Famer and TNT analyst Charles Barkley. During Thursday night’s broadcast of the NBA on TNT, Barkley praised last year’s Nets team  and expressed a different sentiment when it came to Irving:

Kenny Atkinson and the Nets are still getting their story straight with Kyrie Irving’s shoulder injury

Kenny Atkinson and the Nets are still getting their story straight with Kyrie Irving’s shoulder injury Kenny Atkinson had some explaining to do. After a Dec. 23 Heavy.com report cited Kyrie Irving as having “thoracic bursitis” in his right shoulder, Atkinson unequivocally denied the report. “What you’re telling me — what that report said is not true,” he said just days later. If that were the truth, this wouldn’t be a story. After a Dec. 23 Heavy.com report cited Kyrie Irving as having “thoracic bursitis” in his right shoulder, Atkinson unequivocally denied the report.

OK, if I’m a coach — first of all, I’m going to pull him aside and say, ‘Young man, that ain’t your job to criticize our team.’ We bragged the last year, we said all year that New Jersey team plays hard every single night — Brooklyn. They really, really compete. And then you add, let’s say we don’t even need KD [Kevin Durant], we bring in Kyrie, we made the playoffs without you.

Kenny Smith added the Nets should be the fourth seed. Barkley continued:

For you to come in here and then play half the season, then say, ‘Well, we’re just not that good, we’re missing some big pieces.’ Like, nah dude, we made the playoffs without you last year. We’re bringing in an All-Star player, we should be a top-four seed easily.

Clearly, Barkley isn’t big on Irving right now.

Also, it’s good to know Barkley got the memo that the Nets no longer are in New Jersey. They’ve been in Brooklyn since 2012.
