James posted several photos on Instagram of he and Bryant through the years with a caption that started: "I'm Not Ready but here I go."

James passed Bryant on the NBA's all-time scoring list Saturday night in Philadelphia, where Bryant went to Lower Merion High School and where James first met him years later when Bryant was playing in the NBA All-Star Game.

On Monday evening LeBron James posted an emotional Instagram post mourning late basketball star Kobe Bryant , vowing to continue his legacy. “Didn’t think for one bit in a million years that would be the last conversation we’d have. WTF!! I ’ m heartbroken and devastated my brother!!

A few hours later, the world was reeling from the news of Bryant's death, along with his daughter Gianna, 13, and seven others.

James' Monday night post reads in full:

"Man I sitting here trying to write something for this post but every time I try I begin crying again just thinking about you, niece Gigi and the friendship/bond/brotherhood we had! I literally just heard your voice Sunday morning before I left Philly to head back to LA. Didn't think for one bit in a million years that would be the last conversation we'd have. WTF!!

"I'm heartbroken and devastated my brother!! Man I love you big bro. My heart goes to Vanessa and the kids. I promise you I'll continue your legacy man! You mean so much to us all here especially #LakerNation and it's my responsibility to put this (expletive) on my back and keep it going!!

Like Bryant, James entered the NBA out of high school. He grew up admiring him and hoping to follow a similar path.

They played for Team USA in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics and Bryant talked to James about practice habits and other seemingly small tweaks that could make a big difference for someone hoping to have a lengthy career in the league.

According to James' post, he spoke on the phone with Bryant after he moved to No. 3 on the all-time scoring list.

Bryant told USA TODAY Sports' Mark Medina in his final sit-down interview that it would be "juvenile" to have any ill will toward Bryant over passing him.

“I don't know if people want that or want to have this kind of contentious thing where you don't want records to be broken or people there to surpass you,” Bryant told USA TODAY Sports. “You should be happy for the person that comes after you to be able to surpass things that you've done. It's kind of juvenile to think or to behave any other way.”

When James did so, Bryant tweeted: "Continuing to move the game forward @KingJames. Much respect my brother #33644"
