Wednesday night, with Kemba Walker, Marcus Smart and Daniel Theis all in street clothes, and rookie Romeo Langford making his first NBA start, the Celtics still found enough punch for a 116-100 win over Orlando.

1) Shorthanded Wizards find way in double overtime to beat shorthanded Celtics in thriller. Every coach in the NBA preaches the “next man up” One the road, the Wizards started out with a flat effort, especially defensively, and the Celtics got a big first quarter from Marcus Morris, then Greg Monroe

The win was their fifth straight and eighth in their last nine. Jayson Tatum, on quite a path to his first All-Star appearance, led both sides with 33 points to go along with another 23 from Gordon Hayward.

Tatum’s buzzer-beating scoop gave the Celtics an 87-80 lead at the end of the third quarter, after Hayward had scored the previous eight C’s points.

Three-pointers from Terrence Ross and Michael Carter Williams over the first 1:34 of the fourth changed that picture, and when Evan Fournier answered a Tatum three with another bomb, the Celtics lead had been cut to 94-91 with 8:42 left.

But Tatum was in a flow. When Grant Williams ripped the ball out of Aaron Gordon’s hands, Tatum converted with a 15-footer down the other end. Orlando responded with an empty two-shot possession and this time Tatum triggered a Magic timeout with his fourth trey of the night for a 99-91 lead.

Midway through the fourth quarter, he disrupted Philadelphia’s offense once again , this time jumping into the passing lane to

The Celtics have won seven of their last eight games after posting a 123-115 victory over Atlanta on Monday night and appear to be hitting their stride Williams is in line to receive more playing time after the Celtics ruled out starting center Daniel Theis to face the Magic . Theis tweaked his ankle against

Orlando came out empty, and this time Brown dunked over Nic Vucevic, extending the run to 7-0 for a 101-91 edge before the Magic could recover with a Fournier trey.

Fournier’s hoop started a 5-0 Orlando run, with Hayward getting in the way with a 10-footer, followed after a lag on both sides by a Williams put-back for a 105-96 lead.

Vucevic scored, and Hayward and Tatum buried daggers with back-to-back 3-pointers and a 111-98 lead with 1:46 left.

Tatum’s 17-point first half paced the Celtics, who took a 57-56 halftime lead that would be challenged immediately.

Orlando took the lead three times in the first six minutes of the third quarter, and the Celtics three times over the first 6:25, gaining some traction when Brad Wanamaker followed up a Hayward drive with a 3-pointer. And when Orlando tied the score at 72-72, Vincent Poirier converted a three-point play for a 75-74 lead that the French center boosted to 77-72 the next time down.

The Boston Celtics look for their fifth straight victory on Wednesday when they welcome the Orlando Magic to TD Garden. Boston's current run includes a 109-98 win in Orlando on Jan. 24, in which Williams posted a +17 plus-minus rating. The loss was the second in a five-game skid for the Magic

In addition, the Magic feature the top -ranked scoring defense in the NBA, allowing their opponents to score just 104.6 points per game. So who wins Celtics vs. Magic ? And which side of the spread hits in over 60 percent of simulations? The Timberwolves look to be missing out on Russell again .

Hayward then took over, scoring eight straight Celtics points, including a 3-pointer and a three-point play, the latter for an 85-77 edge with 35.3 seconds left. And when Terrence Ross answered with three free throws, Tatum beat the buzzer with a scoop for an 87-80 lead.

In lieu of the injured Smart, Walker and Theis, the Celtics trotted out something truly different — a Langford/Kanter/Tatum/Brown/Hayward starting lineup.

Langford got off to a nice start by blocking an Evan Fournier drive, and though both sides began by throwing the ball all over the place, the Celtics took a narrow lead thanks to runs of 9-0 and 14-2 — the latter good for a 28-19 edge on a Grant Williams corner three.

Williams also converted the rebound off a Tatum miss for a 32-24 lead with 6.8 seconds left in the first quarter.

Orlando finally made a dent mid-way through the second when Evan Fournier followed up four straight points by Terrence Ross with a 3-pointer, kicking off a 9-2 Orlando drive that cut the Celtics lead to 42-40. The Celtics pulled out of that swoon with a Langford bucket, and though they opened up a sliver of space, it wasn’t a comfortable margin.

Gordon, who had just scored Orlando’s previous seven points, then converted a four-point play that cut the Celtics lead to 53-52. Fultz scored for a 53-53 tie. The Celtics took the lead twice in the last minute, both times on Brown baskets, for a 57-56 halftime lead.
