Report: Michigan State hiring Mel Tucker to replace Mark Dantonio After turning down initial interest, it appears that Colorado coach Mel Tucker is headed to East Lansing after all. Tucker and Michigan State agreed to a deal in principal to make him the program’s next football coach, The Athletic reported late on Tuesday night. The deal will reportedly more than double the salary Tucker was making at Colorado, double his salary pool for assistant coaches and include a “substantial increase” to the strength and conditioning staff budget and program resources.

Michigan vs. Michigan State week is here, and if we ’re being honest, it might be my least favorite week of the college football season. Rivalry weeks always include their fair share of trash talk and unpleasantries, but this one has gotten especially ugly in the last decade or so. And truthfully, it is the

If you're not originally from Michigan , the Michigan Michigan State rivalry is a difficult one to get excited about. As a person who lived his life just about everywhere on earth other than Michigan prior to enrollment at the University of Michigan , I knew next to nothing about the rivalry when I first arrived.

"Michigan State-Michigan is different.”

Tucker’s predecessor, Mark Dantontio, emphasized the rivalry early and often throughout his 13-year stint at MSU, which ended with his retirement Feb. 4. That was particularly true after losing to the Wolverines during his debut season in 2007. A news conference a few days later set the tone for his tenure, when he addressed Mike Hart’s “little brother” comments with quotable lines such as “pride comes before the fall” and “it’s not over, it’ll never be over.”

MSU went 8-5 against the Wolverines under Dantonio, but U-M has won the past two and three of the past four.

It has been a whirlwind first few days for Tucker, who was hired away from Colorado on Wednesday. He said he is “in the middle of working” on his coaching staff, but a report came out from Kentucky Sports Radio shortly after Tucker's interview that he was unable to convince Kentucky assistant coach and top recruiter Vince Marrow to join him at MSU.

He leaves behind a standard the next coach will have to live up to, especially in the Mitten State.

Marrow confirmed his decision via Twitter: "I'm staying home! Thank you for all the love and support. Wow! You people are crazy. ... This is a special place and we have #UnfinishedBusiness. Let's go!"

Tucker said he is "working ... around the clock" on assembling his new staff.

"There's no shortage of great coaches and support people that want to be here, that want to be Spartans, because they understand what it means to be here in East Lansing and be a part of Michigan State football," he said. "We're gonna get it done. I can promise you I'm gonna do my best to bring in the best and brightest, and first and foremost, the highest of character guys and coaches to be role models for our student-athletes, guys that are gonna teach, motivate and develop our players on and off the field."

Mel Tucker turned down Michigan State the first time. The second time, he couldn’t say no. Some people associated with Colorado football were dismayed over Tucker ’s change of heart. Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Drew Pearson said on Twitter that Tucker had told his grandson — Torren

Tucker planned to drop the opening puck at Friday night’s MSU-Michigan hockey game at Munn Arena and is expected to speak on College GameDay on Saturday morning and later to the Breslin Center crowd during the Spartans’ men’s basketball game against Maryland. The 48-year-old also discussed a number of other topics about his first week on the job and his abrupt departure from the Buffaloes.

On what his style of football is like: “Mel Tucker football is first and foremost relentless. And relentless has two components – it’s high-velocity, it’s non-stop. We’ll be best-conditioned. We’ll be rooted in technique and fundamentals. We’ll play smart. We won’t beat ourselves. We’ll play fast, because we’ll know what to do. And we’ll be physical on offense, defense and special teams.”

On what he expects the Spartans’ attitude to be: “I feel like we’ve got something to prove, there’s no doubt about that. We’ve got a chip on our shoulders. … What (fans) are gonna see is a brand of football they can be proud of. We gotta look on the field and say, ‘Those guys are playing hard, they care, they’re all-in.’ It’s one thing to play the game for what the game can do for you, but it’s another thing to play the game because you love it. That’s the way the game is supposed to be played.”

On Dantonio, with whom he worked under at MSU as a graduate assistant in 1997-98 and at Ohio State as a defensive backs coach from 2001 to 2003: “Coach Dantonio is very highly competitive, ultra-competitive, a hard worker and very loyal. He is a good teacher, he’s a family man. He cared about his players, he cared about the coaches, and he was always looking to help. That was the thing, he was always looking to help any way he could, whoever he could. And he was just a pleasure to work with."

On sleeping in the offices at MSU while he was a graduate assistant working for Nick Saban: “That brings back memories. I can remember going into the coaches locker room and grabbing a towel every night, or some nights, and rolling it up and using that as a little pillow under my neck in the GA office there and taking a little nap there to try and stay fresh and ready. I believe sleeping fast, and that’s the way we did it back then.”

On Saban, with whom he worked with again at LSU in 2000 and again at Alabama in 2015: “Coach Saban taught me everything. Even though I would sneak into his office sometimes … and sneak a Little Debbie’s every now and again. Coach Saban gave me my start and helped lay the foundation for me in terms of football philosophy for offense, defense and special teams, strength and conditioning, recruiting. I tried to soak it all in.”

On Barry Alvarez, his college coach at Wisconsin: “He always talked to us about what’s important now, or WIN. It was all over the locker room. I use it every day – ‘What’s important now?’ Whether that’s something with coaching or or something that’s personal, prioritizing, being where your feet are.”

On Jim Tressel, for whom he worked at Ohio State from 2001 to 2004: "Coach Tress is a very special man. I was very privileged and blessed to work with him. He would talk to us about being servant leaders. We were there at Ohio State to serve that state and that university and that university community. And that was our purpose. … That’s been part of my philosophy and what I’ve believed in ever since then.”

On what he would have told his players at Colorado if he had been allowed to address them: “I was just gonna speak from the heart and tell them how much I love them and how much I believe in them. I didn’t have anything prepared. Oftentimes when you go in front of your team, you need to speak from the heart. When you look at guys and see their reaction and get the vibe, be truthful. Just being honest and up front with players, that always is the best way to go.”
