He’s trying to minimize both these days. Earnhardt said Sunday before the Daytona 500 that he’s changed his approach to flying following a harrowing crash landing near Bristol Motor Speedway last August. Earnhardt, his wife Amy, daughter Isla, dog and two pilots escaped the fiery jet in east Tennessee. Earnhardt was physically unscathed, but emotionally scarred.“It’s really tough on me getting back in the plane and it will never be the same now that you know the real realities and dangers,” he said during a wide-ranging, 24-minute interview.

Denny Hamlin won the Daytona 500 for the second year in a row Monday, but everyone's thoughts after the race immediately turned to the condition of Ryan Newman , who was involved in a scary crash as the field crossed the finish line to end the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season-opener.

The frightening scene prompted an outpouring of support on social media from the NASCAR community and President Donald Trump.

What happened?

The veteran driver was leading on the final lap when Ryan Blaney made contact from behind, sending Newman’s car out of control. Newman’s car flipped into the air and landed upside down, where it was hit on the driver’s side head-on by Corey La Joie’s car.

Denny Hamlin won a crash -filled Daytona 500 on Monday following a rare postponement for rain after Ryan Newman wrecked on the final lap. This victory came after just the second rain postponement in 62 years, a visit from president Donald Trump , a pair of red flag stoppages and two overtimes.

Denny Hamlin crossed the finish line first, but thoughts were focused on Newman as he spent the immediate aftermath of the race trapped in his mangled, burning car that was extinguished by a rescue team. After the rescue team removed him from the wreckage, Newman was taken to a local hospital with little publicly known about his condition before an update later in the evening that his injuries were not life threatening.

NASCAR reaches out

The NASCAR community shared its thoughts on Newman via social media, including LaJoie, who had nowhere to go when Newman’s car landed in front of his.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., whose father and racing icon Dale Earnhardt died in a 2001 crash at Daytona, also reached out.

As did his sister Kelley, who co-owns JR motorsports with Dale Jr.

President Donald Trump, who attended the Sunday start of the race before it was postponed for rain, also sent his well wishes.

Others in the NASCAR community shared their thoughts for Newman too.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) NASCAR driver Ryan Newman is awake and speaking with family and doctors a day after his horrific crash on the final lap of the Daytona 500. Roush Fenway Racing released an update on its driver Tuesday, about 20 hours after Newman's car slammed into the wall at nearly 200 mph, flipped, got T-boned by another car, flipped several more times and skidded to a halt in flames.Everyone watching feared the worst Monday night and had to wait nearly two hours to learn that Newman's injuries were not considered life-threatening.
