Art Howe in ICU with COVID-19

Art Howe in ICU with COVID-19 Former Major League Baseball player and manager Art Howe is being held in an intensive care unit with COVID-19, he told Tulsi Kamath of KPCR 2 on Thursday. The 73-year-old began feeling symptoms on Sunday, which caused his entire body to shake "like a leaf." On Tuesday, Howe tested positive for COVID-19 and, after his condition did not improve, he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Howe said he's making improvements but that his recovery has been very slow. He added that he can be released once he goes 24 consecutive hours without a fever.

The last 24 hours have been a little insane for Brian Kulbacki of Departed Soles brewery in Jersey City.

His friendly neighborhood brewery has gone from low key to making national headlines all because of one beer.

That beer, of course, pokes a bit of fun at a now well-known Major League Baseball scandal featuring the 2017 World Series Champion Houston Astros.

Carlos Correa has an unpopular solution for MLB players' pay during pandemic

Carlos Correa has an unpopular solution for MLB players' pay during pandemic Houston Astros star Carlos Correa is showing more willingness to get back to work than many of the other big-name players around MLB during the novel coronavirus pandemic. While Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Blake Snell and Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce H arper are leveraging to avoid pay cuts and keep a full season, Correa seemed more open to compromise with the owners. “Our contracts are for 162 games. If we play 81 games, then getting paid for half of it sounds right,” Correa told ESPN Radio in an interview on Saturday. It seems there’s some dissent among MLB players about whether that would qualify as a pay cut.

The session IPA “Trash Can Banger” has been available since Sunday but it didn’t really get crazy until Thursday, Kulbacki said.

Rivalry: Old feelings were due to bubble to the surface; this was Astros-Yankees weekend at Houston

“It really grew some legs and it’s been wild,” he said. “The attention has been overwhelming good and bad. We just figured it would be some good-natured ribbing and a delicious beer.”

The ribbing is at the expense of the Astros, who were found guilty during an investigation by MLB of electronically stealing signs during the 2017 season. Players allegedly alerted batters on the next pitch by banging on a trash can. The Astros beat the Yankees in the 2017 playoffs, before beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.

Bartolo Colon, nearly 47, wants to pitch one more MLB season; and he has a preferred landing spot

Bartolo Colon, nearly 47, wants to pitch one more MLB season; and he has a preferred landing spot 'Big Sexy' last pitched in the majors in 2018"I thought that last year maybe I would have the opportunity," Colon told Rivera. "I know that if it didn't happen last year, this year would be less likely. I'm getting older and the game is all about the young pitchers coming up. When you get older, teams no longer need your services.

Kulbacki said that everyone working at the brewery is a baseball fan, though they don’t all root for the same team, and that they just wanted to have some fun.

Departed Soles makes beer for the Devils and the Red Bulls but since there is no New Jersey baseball team, they are free agents.

Kulbacki takes credit for naming the 5.4 percent session IPA which is made with a little milk sugar. It’s brewed with citra hops to give it an orange, citrusy flavor and then dry hopped with 2017 grams per barrel of strata to enhance the flavor.

It hasn’t all been fun and games though. People have been leaving bad reviews on any website they can find to disparage the brewery which “messes with livelihoods” and one even messaged Kulbacki on social media threatening to kick his dog into the Hudson River.

“It’s not all sunshine and rainbows,” he said. “It’s sports and it’s craft beer though and people shouldn’t take either one too seriously. If you’re old enough to drink, you’re old enough to take a joke.”

Kulbacki said that while the attention has been fun, he hopes it brings attention to the other things the brewery is doing, like donating more than 100 meals in the last two days to local hospitals because “staying safe and staying healthy is more important than sports.”

A four-pack of “Trash Can Banger” is available for $17 at the Departed Soles tasting room.
