ESPN’s Doris Burke opens up about COVID-19 struggle, NBA’s resumption concerns When asked about the challenges the NBA will face as it attempts to mount a comeback next month, Burke didn’t mince words.“The thing that I felt the most was fatigue and headache,” Burke said about having coronavirus. “So for a good stretch of the first two weeks of that, I was just thinking I had a bad flu, because my symptoms were not aligning with what was being told were the main symptoms — the shortness of breath, the pressure on the chest — I didn’t have those scary symptoms. So for a good stretch of time, I didn’t think I had it. But then I finally decided to get tested.

NFL preseason games in 2020 are not worth the risk, and without them, players can benefit from an expanded training camp schedule. With the NFL - NFLPA joint medical committee having suggested a 48-day training camp, including a 21-day acclimation (strength and conditioning) period, the NFLPA pushed the league to implement that schedule. All 2020 offseason programs have played out completely virtually, and while players have been working out individually, the thought is they need extra time this year to get into ideal football shape and mitigate the risk of injuries.

An NFL Players Association source said Friday that the union's board of player representatives had voted to recommend scrapping all 2020 preseason games . The matter came to a vote during Thursday evening's conference call with NFLPA player reps, and the source said the vote was unanimous. It's unclear whether the NFL will consider the players' recommendation. The league has yet to formally announce the reduction of the preseason from four games to two, although a source told ESPN's Kevin Seifert on Wednesday that the decision had been made.

We heard Thursday that the NFLPA might be pushing to cancel the preseason, and indeed, the union’s board of player reps have unanimously recommended that no preseason games be played, as Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports. That decision was reached during Thursday night’s call between the player reps and NFLPA medical director Thom Mayer.

As Albert Breer of SI.com notes, the preseason schedule was also discussed during the call, which was open to all players. The union has floated the following summer schedule, per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network:

NEW YORK — The National Football League has officially canceled all preseason games for the 2020 NFL season . While the NFLPA recommended eliminating the preseason on July 3, the league made it official today. " Players and coaches will be tested for the virus regularly, including every day for a while. Preseason games have been canceled . Everyone in the team environment must follow rigorous health and safety protocols to keep themselves and each other safe. When there is a positive test, strict regulations will be enforced to isolate and care for that individual and to contain the virus

ust two days after we learned the NFL’s plan to cut the 2020 preseason in half, the NFL Players Association is reportedly recommending that the league cancel the entire preseason . J. The NFLPA ’s board of representatives voted unanimously on the recommendation, according to ESPN. If the Eagles end up playing the original Weeks 2 and 3 of their preseason schedule, they will face the Dolphins on the road and the Patriots at home. They were originally scheduled to be at Indianapolis in Week 1 and at home against the Jets in Week 4, but those games have already been canceled .

From there, the schedule would shift immediately to Week 1 of the regular season. And as Pelissero notes, players would be divided into smaller groups during the strength and conditioning and unpadded practice portions of the schedule, which would buy an extra month of time before everyone would have to come together for the padded sessions.

Of course, the NFL has full authority over whether to schedule preseason games or not, and Graziano notes that it’s unclear whether the league will consider the union’s recommendation. As Breer points out, teams would lose out on gate revenue — if fans are allowed in stands, which is a dubious proposition — and local TV money. Plus, the NFL Network usually sees its highest ratings in August, so cancelling the preseason slate altogether would be a tough pill to swallow.

Report: NFLPA Board Recommends Not Playing Preseason Games . The NFL desires to cut the preseason down to two games , with Week 1 and Week 4 reportedly slated to be eliminated from the schedule. Trimming the preseason will give teams extra practice time following an abbreviated offseason program. The NFLPA voted on the recommendation on a call Thursday night, but it remains unclear if the league will consider it, reports Graziano.

Despite the cancellation of half the preseason , the NFL is still reportedly optimistic that the 2020 season will be able to start on time. The league is still finalizing its protocols for the year, and one thing that's almost certainly going to happen is a lot of testing. NFLPA medical director Thom Mayer announced on June 16 that players will likely be tested up to three times per week to prevent the spread of the virus.
