club boss Thomas Röttgermann now wants to ask the former Düsseldorf coach to hold back with critical words. "He is simply not well advised to do things the way he is doing them," quoted the "Rheinische Post" Röttgermann in a comment.

«I had the - perhaps naive - hope that the number of Friedhelm's appearances and public comments would decrease over time. That did not happen so we will now approach him and speak to him, »continued Röttgermann.

The 66-year-old spark that had led Fortuna to promotion to the Bundesliga in 2018 and to stay there in 2019, but was on leave in January, had criticized the club several times after the relegation. Among other things, Funkel had spoken of an “absolutely avoidable” return to the 2nd division. Sports director Uwe Klein had recently confirmed that Funkel's statements were not well received within the team.
