The team announced this in a statement. "To be clear, Matthew did not have COVID-19, it was an incorrect test result," the statement said. Since Stafford had two negative corona tests in a row, he is now allowed to participate in team activities again.

The Lions announced Tuesday that they are placing their quarterback on injured reserve , and he will not play again in 2019. In other # Lions news, they're placing QB Matthew Stafford on IR, officially ending his season. He’d thrown for 2,499 yards and 19 touchdowns in eight games.

This does not necessarily mean that Stafford has tested positive for COVID-19. Stafford has not publicly commented on the news. The list is designated for players who have either tested positive for COVID-19 or have been placed in quarantine after a potential exposure.

Lions starting quarterback Matthew Stafford could be "a real game-time decision" according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. On Monday the Bears announced that running back Artavis Pierce was placed on the reserve / COVID - 19 list .

The Lions placed two more players on the reserve / COVID - 19 list , giving them seven players on the list . Cornerback Justin Coleman, whose positive test previously was reported Thursday, tested negative Tuesday before a positive test Wednesday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

The news also does not necessarily impact Stafford’s availability for the upcoming season. Players have an option to opt out of the season because of the pandemic, and many have taken that option.

Stafford has not opted out. Players have until Aug. 3 to decide to do so.

Stafford has significant health concerns at home. His wife Kelly Stafford suffered with a non-cancerous brain tumor that required surgery in April of 2019. She dealt when an arduous recovery in the months after the operation.

Matthew and Kelly also have four children at home, including a newborn who arrived in June, 14 months after Kelly’s operation.

Chase Daniel and David Blough sit behind Stafford on the Lions depth chart. Daniel is a career backup who has started five games in his 10-season NFL career.

Blough was an undrafted rookie out of Purdue last season. He started five games after an injury to Stafford that the Lions all lost as he compiled four touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 54 percent of his pass attempts.
