They can not go inside the clubhouse or the locker room either. That makes getting close-up looks at elite golfers’ equipment challenging, but Titleist made a back-up set of Justin Thomas’ gear available to senior writer David Dusek and shipped it to his home in Connecticut.

Even with decent weather at TPC Harding Park, players will spend the week adjusting to drastically different launch and ball-flight conditions for the season’s first major. For Justin Thomas, who won last week’s World Golf Championship in Memphis and moved to world No. 1, the difference between this week and last is dramatic.

PGA Championship, Bryson DeChambeau will bring golf's distance debate to primetime Lately, no one has more brute force than Bryson DeChambeau. The 26-year-old rising star brought the distance conversation back to the forefront when he returned from the PGA Tour’s three-month, COVID-19 stoppage with 20-plus pounds of added muscle and 20-plus yards of added power. Due to a pandemic re-shuffled scheduled, it’s the first major of 2020 and a chance for DeChambeau to put his muscle where his mouth is. On paper, Harding Park doesn’t appear to be a layout fit for a power player with its listed yardage this week at 7,234 yards – not particularly long by PGA standards.

“Today my club head speed with the driver was 115, 116 [mph]. I was topping out at 116 and a half maybe, and I was getting a couple numbers in Memphis, I was kind of cruising at 119, 120 and I could get it up to 123, 124 if I really, really went after it,” Thomas said. “That's a big difference, especially if I'm hitting up on it here versus in Memphis. That's a 30-yard difference.”

Thomas also explained that his ball speed was around 170 to 174 mph on Tuesday, compared to last week in Memphis when that number climbed to 177 to 181 mph and he was quick to point out it’s an issue that everyone in this week’s field will face which has prompted some added attention to detail.

“It's just an adjustment. I think for me it normally takes a day or two and really being out on the course hitting a shot, being like, wow, hitting another one from the fairway after you didn't believe it and it still comes up short, and then you start to kind of recalibrate,” Spieth said. “With a very similar swing, ball speed and spin rate, just the air itself and the ball being cooler, it's anywhere from 10 to 13 yards [shorter] for me.”
